Celtic are reported to be considering a move to sign Ross Doohan.
UEFA regulations to have four Academy players and four Association trained players in squads of 25 appear to be the drivers for the move.
Scott Bain has filled one of the Association places over the last few seasons without providing any real competition to Joe Hart or Kasper Schmeichel.
The former Dundee keeper has only made five first team appearances over the last five years with his last start coming at Motherwell in September 2023 when Hart was suspended.
Vil Sinisalo has looked a very impressive back-up to Schmeichel over the last six matches but there could be a vacancy coming up for a third choice keeper.
Stephen McGowan of The Herald reports:
CELTIC are considering a move for Aberdeen’s out-of-contract goalkeeper Ross Doohan.
Entering the final 12 months of his Parkhead contract current third choice Scott Bain could go in search of first team football after the Scottish Cup Final and Doohan features on a list of potential replacements.
Obliged to name eight homegrown Scots in their Champions League squad under UEFA regulations, four of the players must stem from a club’s own youth system. A graduate of Celtic’s Lennoxtown academy Doohan spent seven years at the champions between 2015 and 2022 and, after 18 first team appearances for Jimmy Thelin’s side this season, ticks the boxes.
Signed from Forest Green Rovers in 2023 the 27-year-old deputised for Pittodrie number one Dimitar Mitov, but was displaced for the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Hearts.
Doohan’s Pittodrie deal is due to expire in the summer with Thelin on record as saying that the contract talks are ongoing.
Herald Sport understands, however, that Aberdeen are working on signing at least one keeper this summer, with third pick Tom Ritchie also set to depart the club. Ironically, Doohan’s final game for the club could come against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final Hampden on May 24.
When McGowan writes on Celtic you can be fairly certain that there is substance to it.
Bain joined Celtic in January 2018 at the age of 28, a year younger there could be a lot of financial appeal for Doohan even if his first team prospects would be very limited.
This season Doohan has started 17 matches for Aberdeen.
So Who’s supplying the alleged information then..
