Who is Ian Jamieson? Celtic’s PR guru

The mystery continues- who was behind the Saturday night statement from Celtic that managed to stoke up the record levels of anger and frustration among supporters.

Ultimately it falls on Michael Nicholson. As CEO he is officially at the top of the tree, if he didn’t know about the 1030 word statement then the problems run deeper than most fans can imagine.

Behind the scenes Ian Jamieson is the long serving Communications Manager, he joined Celtic pre Peter Lawwell and has retained his job of shadowing the manager and making sure that players don’t say a word out of place.

That second task has been completed to perfection, players all say the exact same things, nothing varies with the exception of Alistair Johnston. The last time that a player veered off message was in May when Vil Sinisalo discussed the missiles thrown at him at Ibrox.

Jamieson oversees all of that and who is on the invite list for club media conferences, fan media is kept at a distance, on a rota with the remit of to keep their questions dull and boring or you might be waiting a while before you get your next invite.

It is perfectly possible that Jamieson had the weekend off and knew little or nothing of Saturday’s statement, he is hardly likely to be involved at the top level of policy discussions.

The rambling statement feels like the contempt that the Chairman would show answering a question at the AGM put into Chat GPT to flannel it out with some token acknowledgments to the fans (entitled customers).

Jamieson now faces a testing couple of days, Friday’s media conference promises to provide fireworks, it is hard to see Brendan Rodgers taking a warning from the Communications Manager on what he is allowed to say.

Over the weekend the message from Celtic went out of control, it would test a top PR specialist to steer things around, in Jamieson Celtic certainly don’t have a world class operator delivering their message.
