Chris Sutton has delivered a scathing attack on the back of Portugal’s World Cup exit.

Ronaldo and Roberto Martinez were the twin targets on the back of the 1-0 defeat from Spain in the Round of 16.

Despite having some of the best players in Europe Martinez build his side and tactics around the whim of Ronaldo.

The former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus striker has vied with Leo Messi throughout this century for accolades and greatness.

The debate over which one truly is the greatest will never be resolved with views entreched on both sides.

There is no doubt whose side Martinez is on.

Throughout his three and a half years managing Portugal his only ambition appears to have been pandering to the wishes of the 41-year-old.

Against Spain in Dallas last night Portugal barely put in an attempt to win the match.

They put in a spoiling performance but came unstuck in stoppage time when Ferran Torres scored for Spain.

In the BBC commentary box no sympathy was offered.

Martinez has long been linked with managing Celtic.

An approach was made when he was managing Swansea but the Welsh club refused him permission to talk with Celtic.

At Wigan Martinez won the FA Cup in the season that they were relegated.

At Everton, Belgium and now Portugal his results have been underwhelming.

Having worked at Wigan and Belgium with Shaun Maloney the links to Celtic are lazy and obvious.

While playing for Motherwell Martinez met his future wife, whether she dreams of returning to Bellshill at some future point is unknown.

Ronaldo now has a new manager to return to at Al Nassr. It is doubtful if Ange Postecoglou will be as indulgent with his new superstar from Portugal.
