Kris Boyd’s Latest Celtic U-Turn Speaks Volumes

Kris Boyd has never been accused of being generous towards Celtic. In fact, many supporters would argue the opposite. Over the years he has built a reputation for finding fault with the club whenever the opportunity arises, making his latest comments all the more surprising.

Speaking on Go Ballistic, Boyd described Celtic’s proposed £11 million move for Kasper Høgh as a “statement” signing.

“It’s a statement from Celtic. £11 million, that’s a lot of money,” Boyd said.

“For me, looking at the way he plays, he will come in with a swagger. He will be here to show I want to be the top goalscorer in the league. I want to go and score in the cups, I want to get to the Champions League and score in it again.”

He even suggested the club have changed their transfer strategy by targeting players capable of improving the starting XI rather than simply adding bodies to the squad.

An Admission Few Expected

Coming from almost anyone else, those comments would barely raise an eyebrow.

Coming from Boyd, they amount to a remarkable admission.

This is a pundit whose commentary on Celtic has repeatedly divided opinion, with many supporters believing his standards change depending on whether decisions favour or go against the Scottish champions.

Trust The Officials… Until Celtic Benefit

Only a week before Celtic travelled to Motherwell, four major decisions went against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Easter Road.

Boyd’s message afterwards was simple. Trust the officials. Referees and VAR make difficult decisions and supporters simply had to accept them.

There was no forensic breakdown of every incident. No prolonged attempt to prove the officials had made a series of glaring mistakes. Boyd’s position was that the decisions had to be accepted.

Then Everything Changed

Seven days later, Celtic were awarded a late VAR penalty against Motherwell.

Suddenly Boyd’s appeal to trust the officials disappeared.

During the debate on Sky Sports, he launched into an animated argument insisting the ball could not possibly have struck the defender’s hand because, in his opinion, the flight of the ball proved it must have come off the player’s head instead.

The contrast was impossible to ignore. One week Boyd was urging everyone to accept the judgement of referees and VAR. The next, he was attempting to dismantle that same judgement frame by frame because the decision had gone in Celtic’s favour.

Chris Sutton challenged Boyd’s theory live on air, exposing what many Celtic supporters viewed as a glaring contradiction.

Boyd has spent years questioning Celtic’s recruitment and decision-making, yet even he appears unable to dismiss this deal. Describing it as a statement signing is an acknowledgement that Celtic are finally spending significant money on a player expected to improve the first team immediately.
