As the old saying goes, the only thing worse than an evening with Pat Nevin would be two nights with the former Real Madrid wing ace.

Of course Nevin never actually played for Real Madrid but in his mind anything is possible.

Typical of him he has a very advanced case of Wee Guy Syndrome.

Forever jealous of those that earned more than him Nevin has spent the best part of 40 creating the illusion that he is a deep thinker, a footballing intellectual.

Back in the eighties football in and around London was very raw.

The media welcomed Charlie Nicholas and Frank McAvennie to town as they provided as many front page tales as they did on the back pages.

Nevin created an alternative image. He read books and listened to different music, or so he liked to pretend. Lefties loved this alternative footballer.

And with the Tories in power and Rangers dominating in Scotland post 1986 the former Clyde winger was a trendy leftie never slow to discuss his dream of joining Celtic.

Fortunately that never happened, Nevin became more distanced from his boyhood club. So distanced these days that he is a full on hater, someone that will broadcast fiction to distract from the success of Celtic.

Again Nevin has an obliging media to call on, especially with the BBC who still value and pay for his warped opinions.

Even by his standards Nevin overstepped the mark in May with his lies about Lawrence Shankland.

While Nevin’s team-mates looked for coaching jobs or roles in the media as their playing days would down wee Pat had grander ideas.

With his friend John Boyle buying Motherwell he swooped to sign Nevin from Kilmarnock in 1998 for the dual role of superstar winger and Chief Executive Officer.

LEADING MOTHERWELL TO OBLIVION

In one of his many autobiographies Nevin claimed that Boyle offered him the job of Celtic CEO while he was playing for Everton. Apparently Boyle was considering buying Celtic at the time. To the surprise of no-one Boyle has no recollection of the discussions.

At Motherwell Nevin set about offering ridiculous contracts to some of his old mates from Tranmere Rovers and Everton. The wage bill soared as the CEO proved that he was the most intelligent man in Scottish football.

John Spencer, Ged Brannan and Tony Thomas quit Merseyside for Fir Park.

Shaun Teale, Roberto Martinez, Don Goodman, Greg Strong and Sasa Curic, a £4m signing for Aston Villa four years earlier all signed for Motherwell.

Alas there was no magic money tree as Boyle discovered. His investment went straight out the door to largely average footballers enjoying an unexpected Scottish pay day.

In April 2002 Motherwell went into administration. Seventeen players and various staff members including the CEO were made redundant.

Nevin has never worked inside football since then, a grudge that he struggles to disguise.

Tonight he will be explaining how everything he did was correct but outside forces conspired to prevent Motherwell from becoming the Bodo Glimt of the day.

With Nevin the mastermind, naturally.
