Two and a half months after claiming that Lawrence Shankland was assaulted by Celtic fans Pat Nevin has confessed to lying.
The former Motherwell CEO was on co-commentary duty for BBC 5 Live, seated in the front row of the media section at Celtic Park.
Like most in the media section Nevin was hoping for the so called romance of Hearts winning the Scottish title for the first time in 60 years.
During most of his playing days as a leftie hipster Nevin was a Celtic fan, highlighting his support for the club at every opportunity.
Switching into a career in media work Nevin switched to self loathing mode as he distanced himself from Celtic.
He even went as far as declaring himself to be a Hibs fan!
Generally it is only oddballs and weirdros that switch clubs, unless it is seeing the light to support Celtic. Nevin chose the reverse action, in an especially contrived way.
PAT NEVIN BROADCASTS LIES OVER SHANKLAND ASSAULT
His claim of Shankland being assaulted by Celtic fans was the perfect deflection from Celtic’s title success.
Tom English, Kenny Macintyre and Ryan Stevenson were all over it.
Celtic’s favoured media partners joined in while Jim White and Simon Jordan suddenly showed an interest in Scottish football.
TalkSPORT even invited Tony Bloom on to substantiate the lies from Nevin. Naturally White didn’t ask for any news on the injured players or proof that the assaults took place.
Ten days after the fake assaults Shankland passed a medical to move to Ibrox.
Sheepishly and with his trademark giggle, yesterday Nevin backtracked on the lies that he broadcast from Celtic Park. He couldn’t even get his apology correct.

We all make mistakes and I made a big one last year, at the end of the season. So it’s right at the end of that game I thought that one of the Celtic players, eh Celtic fans had punched a Hearts player.
It didn’t happen so my apologies for that, but, em, reality, the madness and excitement. It hit everybody, and it wasn’t just Scotland, it was outwith Scotland.
Nevin turned on his fake enthusiasm during that interview.

It’s a brilliant, brilliant moment but some Celtic fans are attacking Lawrence Shankland. Two or three have punched him. It’s a dreadful thing that has happened just now. These are absolutely unacceptable scenes.
What a brilliant, fabulous great moment for Celtic Football Club and this is awful, absolutely dreadful.
He wanted and wished that Hearts players had been assaulted. Celtic’s two late goals left Nevin even deeper in self-loathing mode than usual.
Celtic losing the title would have given him something to gloat on over the summer. Beaming that ‘I was there’. He was there on radio duty and fabricated events for his own needs, his own comfort.
Nevin is as genuine as Danny Rohl’s hairline.

Nicholson should do something that he is actually good at and that is looking into bringing a prosecution against Nevin.
Not sure our in-house “top sports lawyer” would know where to start with a prosecution. The last time he heard of them was probably when he was an undergrad 30 years ago!

Well at least wee Pat the rat has expressed some sort of remorse.Our own Packie Bonner has remained silent following similar accusations by himself on Radio Shortbread.This along with his publicised support for Ireland playing Israel has been an eye opener for many in our support.Have more contempt for him than Nevin a well established ‘Uncle Tim’.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever why Nevin should not be banned from Celtic Park for a considerable amount of time after his lying misleading and totally wrong remarks about Celtic FC players and fans …none whatsoever ! In fact it would be completely appropriate if the board decided so …no matter who Nevin’s employers may be ? If it gets accepted and tolerated it gives the green light for such comments to be made again and again with total impunity !
Nevin’s had over 2 months to consider an appropriate ‘apology’ and the best he could come up with was:

Did he have his eyes closed when thought that?
Yet, he still went on to verbalise that “thought” on a live transmission?!
Apart from being dishonest,
it was a reckless, false ‘observation’ at a time of heightened emotions.
Nevin has zero credibility: should stick to playing his tunes.

The BBC had to issue a groveling apology after the Irish Government got involved but the wee rat hid behind his hunnish mates.
Nevin is the “righteous” guy who took a paycheck from one of the most racist clubs in the UK from 1983-1988 so we should take no lectures from him.
Nevin should never be allowed back on Celtic Park again. A lying turncoat. Quite happy to slander the club not so happy being pulled up about that.
