According to Frank McAvennie Celtic made an enquiry to sign Scott Bain from Falkirk in the summer.
It seems that at the age of 34 someone inside Celtic thought that it was a good idea to bring back the former third choice keeper as second choice to Vil Sinisalo.
That story was largely overlooked as McAvennie launched a disgusting attack on Auston Trusty.
Back in his heyday in the eighties things were very different.
To be badly impacted by the death of your father is fairly normal these days. It isn’t woke.
During the summer Trusty was back home and involved with the USA World Cup squad. Last month he was on a different continent when his father died.
McAvennie let rip on the Let Me Be Frank podcast.
It was recorded alongside former Daily Record reporter Simon Houston. These days he is a human celebrant, clearly found no problem in the Trusty comments from his co-presenter.
Maybe Houston thought that the quotes would be good for generating attention. Likes, shares and subscriptions.
On Wednesday morning the podcast is still available to view. An explanation rather than an apology from McAvennie appeared on XÂ on Tuesday afternoon.
On the same podcast McAvennie gave away one transfer gem of information.
Normally McAvennie passes off popular WhatsApp rumours as ‘I’ve heard’ or ‘I’ve been told’.
THE DETAIL ON CELTIC’S INTEREST IN SCOTT BAIN
There hadn’t been any rumours about Bain returning to Celtic but on the Let Me Be Frank podcast McAvennie claimed:
I was told by a director at Falkirk that Celtic tried to make an offer for him. Celtic came in to take him back.
A couple of months ago. Just at the start of the season, they came in, so I don’t know why all this was.
Later McAvennie added:
The problem with Bain. The problem with keepers is that, unfortunately, he would be great in our side because he is kept busy. Unfortunately, a lot of the Celtic keepers, they aren’t busy, and that’s what makes them special, because they have to keep on it and they have to keep alive.
Sometimes, for 70-80 minutes, they have nothing to do, and then all of a sudden, they have to get called on. That’s, unfortunately, where Bain fell down, and people like him. But I think Sinisalo is better than Johnstone.
On reflection enquiring about Bain fits in entirely with the attitudes prominent at Celtic Park.
Turning the clock back is the default position for most things. When Bain left Ross Doohan was signed and hasn’t been near an appearance since his return to Celtic.
When all else failed goalkeeper wise Martin O’Neill turned to Sam Johnstone, third choice at Wolves with good reason.
For his own reasons O’Neill brought Johnstone in to play at Ibrox. He wasn’t directly at fault for any of the goals but contributed to the 3-0 defeat.
Johnstone is a downgrade on Jack Butland.
Two bang average English goalkeepers that once had a decent season and has dined off that for years on bloated salaries.
Put in the firing line at Celtic, dealing with demands and expectations he has crumbled.
@ScotlandSky The diddy of a keeper clutching it & claiming it hadn’t gone over.???
