Peter Lawwell has paid his respects to Tommy Gemmell who passed away this morning.

The death of a Lisbon Lion in the 50th anniversary of the club’s greatest triumph has brought great sadness to the Celtic support who were informed at the weekend that Billy McNeill has dementia.

Gemmell has a unique place in Celtic folklore having scored in two European Cup Finals and also in the ill fated World Club Championship against the animals of Racing Club.

His greatest moment came in Lisbon when a trademark thundering shot brought Celtic level against Inter Milan before Stevie Chalmers scored a late winner.

Gemmell was a larger than life figure who, along with Jimmy Johnstone and Bertie Auld, tested the patience of Jock Stein but the Celtic manager knew their value to the team.

After coming through the ranks at Celtic Gemmell left for Nottingham Forrest before returning to Scotland at Dundee who he also managed.
