Charlie Grant joins Dundee

|

Freed midfielder Charlie Grant has been given the chance to revive his career by First Division Dundee.

Grant captained Celtic’s youth side to the 2006 double of league and SFA Youth Cup but his career was never able to develop due to a succession of nasty sounding pubic injuries.

Along with Simon Ferry in midfield he was one of the big hopes from that era with Grant an inspiration when Celtic beat Hearts in extra-time to life the 2006 SFA Cup at Celtic Park with a side that included Darren O’Dea, Scott Cuthbert and Paul Caddis.

Other clubs may have ditched a player with consistent injury problems but Celtic provided Grant with a further twelve month deal last summer and he featured in a number of games for the development/reserve squad towards the end of the season before being released.

Speaking about his move to Dundee he said: “The manager phoned me on Thursday to see if I wanted to come up and have a look about the place.

“As soon as I got here I knew it was the place for me. I got a good feeling about it.

I’ve been out for a couple of years with a pelvic injury but I’m fit again and all I want is first-team football.

“The manager has taken a chance on me and I want to repay him. I’ll have to wait and see whether I’m selected against Partick but I’m certainly ready and desperate to play if he wants me to.

“I’ve spoken to Billy Dodds who said there are a lot of technically gifted players here but in any team you need a balance.

“So you need someone who is able to put their foot in. My job is sitting in the middle of the park to sweep up any loose balls then give to the forward players. I’ll hopefully add a bit of grit to the side.”

Dundee boss Gordon Chisholm added: “Charlie has joined us on a year’s contract and we’re delighted to get him. I said the other night we got bullied and we don’t want that.

“We brought Charlie in for that very reason because he is very competitive. He’s a good age and will be a great addition to the squad.”
