Mark Wilson's night to remember

|

Mark Wilson Celtic newsMark Wilson isn’t bothered that his ‘glory strike’ was almost forgotten in the drama of last night’s win over Rangers.

The born-again goal-ace sclaffed his shot to bounce over Allan McGregor and evade Madjid Bougherra just seconds after a ferocious shot knocked Sasa Papac unconscious.

Three red cards, a dozen yellow and touchline clashes between both management teams captured the headlines as quiet-man Wilson took a back seat.

On Tuesday morning he was a doubtful starter for the match but having missed out on too much of his Celtic career the former Dundee United defender was determined to make it.

“I had a sore ankle from the Motherwell match on Sunday but the medical staff were unbelievable and helped make me available,” he explained.

“To beat Rangers at any time, as a Celtic player and fan, is unbelievable. To score the goal which won the game is something I couldn’t have dreamt. It was a fantastic performance against a very well organised Rangers team.”

The Scott Brown El-Hadji Diouf verbal battle continued into a third match with Wilson enjoying his ringside view of the verbal warfare.

He added: “The two of them are like that, very controversial characters. It’s part of Scott’s game and Diouf is probably the same. He’s had a long career and is never far from controversy.

“Put those two together and it’s a bit of a nightmare. I am there behind them trying to calm them down.

“There have been a lot of Old Firm games so the players are coming up against each other a lot.

“Battles from previous games seem to be over-running now into the next game.

“From a personal point of view we can only keep our heads and keep calm in these situations. It’s very difficult – especially with an atmosphere like that.

“There are certain players that have a go at each other – you know who I am talking about. You just need to keep calm at times and I’m glad we kept 11 players on the pitch.

“Rangers were complaining about things and I saw them touching the referee when he was trying to book them. I know things were not going their way, but they will be disappointed when they look at it.

“The crowd influence things and some players can handle the pressure of the games better than others.”
