John Barnes wants to return to managing- but not at Liverpool

Barnes had a disastrous spell in charge of Tranmere last season, winning three and drawing once in 14 games, but is still hoping to get another chance in management.

“At the moment I’m doing a lot of media work, although the long-term aim is to get back into football,” he told fifa.com. “Coaching, managing, somewhere, anywhere.

“I know I’m not going to get a blue-chip job in football, but I’d love to get back on the international scene. Even if I get a job here in football, it will be in League 1, League 2 or other lower division clubs.

“I am willing to go, and I have worked in Jamaica before, so I would be willing to look at most opportunities anywhere in the world.”

Barnes was dropped in at the deep end in management by Kenny Dalglish in 1999 without any management experience.

When Dalglish returned to manage Liverpool this season he decided to bring in Stevie Clarke as assistant rather than be reunited with Barnes.

Despite being out of management for more than a year Barnes has claimed that he wouldn’t take a backroom job at Anfield.

Asked how he’d feel about being offered a return to Liverpool he replied: “It depends how he wanted me to help. I want to manage, I do not want to go and be a reserve team coach or a youth team coach anywhere, regardless of whether it is Liverpool or a smaller club.

“I want to be in charge, I want to be a manager so if it means me going to a smaller club that is what I will do.”

Another chance at management? If there is one thing he never was is a manager. He was always a joke since the day he hung his boots up. He was a sand dancer as a player and a pee brain as he attempted managership. He was never a manager.
