Liverpool Just Can't Get Enough of Celtic

|

Liverpool football newsAfter borrowing and rewording The Fields of Athenrye Liverpool have again turned to Celtic to promote their ‘fan culture’.

The marketing people at Anfield don’t have to look too far for inspiration as the club launch a ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ range of t-shirts which is apparently all about Luis Suarez!.

Numerous English clubs have picked up on the sing made famous by the Green Brigade who made it their signature tune at the start of the season sparking a fresh wave of interest in Depeche Mode.

Celtic’s 3-0 win over Rangers in February brough JCGE to an international audience with the Sky Sports cameras picking up the singing coming from 111. That game was also the first time that the ‘reverse-huddle’ was seen at Celtic Park.

I wonder if Liverpool or anyone else will copy-cat Celtic striking new look international kit?

For ten years Liverpool fans have been singing about Heighway on the wing but as yet no one has been able to locate exactly where the fields of Anfield Road are located.

The JCGE t-shirt can be bought from Liverpool for only £14.99. What’s next on the hit list of those cheeky scousers? Will it be the Brother Walfrid statue or Bairds Bar that they have their eyes on for their next swoop?.

Cmon we’re brothers. You borrow YNWA we borrow JCGE. Share and share alike.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

Agree with you, good luck for next season, hope King Kenny is a success.

    • Ally says:

YNWA was sang by Celtic supporters before you lot. It was from the play Carousel which is where your gerry got it from after hearing Celtic fans sing it. The play opened in 1945 on Broadway. Celtic fans are proud that such a famous team as our gets coppied by all

  • grizz says:

    I notice you don’t mention Y.N.W.A.
get over it feller, at least we are singing your stuff and not Rangers

  • Stephen Joynes says:

The fans’ goal celebration—involving the turning of their backs to the pitch, joining arms and jumping up and down in unison—originated in 1961.

In Poland (and to many fans across Europe), it is not called “The Poznan” it is known as a “Grecques” and is performed by many sets of fans. Lech Poznan supporters debate with other Polish and Eastern European fans as to who actually came up with it first.

It has been copied by fans of Manchester City following the teams’ meeting in the UEFA Europa League in October 2010. This has in turn been copied by other English football fans, notably such as that of Leicester City after their clash with Manchester City in the 3rd round of the F.A. Cup and is referred to by the English fans as “doing the Pozna?”.

Glasgow Celtic also do a version of The Poznan known as “The Huddle” the words sung by the fans are “Let’s All Do The Huddle”.

Celtic’s fans first did “The Huddle” in 2011 at Parkhead Stadium, whereas Lech have been doing it for more than four decades.[1] <<< Bit rich coming from your lot …oh and YNWA << OURS!

    • Thecelticblog says:

The huddle was first done in 2006 at an away game in Livi. Nice to know you can copy and paste.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

The question is, who does it better!? Check out Celtic fans doing “the huddle” on the final day of the season. Unbeatable.

  • stan howard says:

If Celtic were first then they must admit the cover version is infinatly better than the original, there is hardly a stadium in the world were Liverpool FC chants are not heard.

When Celtic fans came to Anfield in the 60s and heard You’ll Never Walk Alone then copied it, did we take offence, no, lfc fans will never turn their backs they are there for the football.

Believe it or not the kop started singing pop songs because they were so proud that Liverpool was leading the world with the mersey sound, they sang she loves you yeah yeah yeah, and even Cilla Black songs but Gerry and the Pacemakers stuck, the rest is history.

    • Karen Lashley says:

I can’t believe these Celtic fans, their so precious!! Pathetic big babies, do we as Liverpool fans make a song and dance about how they sing our song YNWA? Even when they have seemingly adopted it as their anthem?

My feelings about Celtic and their fans is dramatically changing for the worse now, i don’t like them.

      • Karen take a chill pill for goodness sake,,,one song debate and now you dont like us,,,,my my im crushed lol

        Hail hail

      • bluenosenemesis says:

Easy on Karen,I think the story is just an observation and not a criticism, after all imitation is the greatest form of flattery-and it works both ways.
        We’ll never walk alone.

      • Thecelticblog says:

Get your rattle back in the pram. I hate to see what else would change your feelings. Not liking Hollyoaks maybe?

Your moral compass must be set to lame.

  • Joe McHugh says:

    It’s all good fun!

I don’t think that there’s ever been a better YNWA than before the 2003 UEFA Cup tie with Gerry Marsden.

I think Celtic are on pretty safe ground as the originators of The Fields as JCGE.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

At european games YNWA by the bhoys is outstanding, watching and listening to that is absolute quality and sums up why i love football.

  • mcscouse says:

As a Lpool fan i have only respect for Celtic and their supporters but us stealing your songs is not strictly a one way street is it.

Are you not forgetting a certain song you sing (and sing very well by the way) that has been Liverpool’s anthem for years, the one that Gerry Marsden presented a recording of to the late great Bill Shankly and has been part of liverpools history ever since .

I think you know which one I mean eh 🙂 if any team is going to sing our anthem them I’m glad its Celtic but we changed the words to fields of athenrye we didnt steal your song really we only pinched the tune … .

  • Rick says:

You’re Celtic fans, therefore you should have respect for club and fans who have respect for Celtic. Liverpool is just that so I don’t see why you are trying to make them look bad.

  • Lpool says:

I thought the fields of athenry was a dubliners song not a celtic song

  • mcscouse says:

wait till you hear “flower of anfield ” 🙂

  • Ross m says:

I’m a Celtic fan and it doesn’t bother me that much if they are all singing it just as long as we are recognised as doing it first 🙂

  • Will says:

The fields of Anfield road is the big green bit on Anfield road where the reds play doh!

  • fozza says:

I’ve heard this idea thrown around quite a lot, but how would fans feel if we were to get ‘I Just Can’t Get Enough’ put on our badge?

Liverpool did it with YNWA when other teams started to sing it, and I also feel that the phrase is a fitting one for a club with a tradition of playing exciting football.

It might just be me but I think that would be a fantastic phrase to have along the bottom of the badge.

The current badge is historical, but the only thing that would change is putting a few more words on. It would signal a new era at Celtic, and in the season when the team and fan’s special bond was reinstated, it would seem fitting.

The song has been an important part of the thunder coming back.

    Anyone agree?

    • bluenosenemesis says:

I asked the question on another forum recently, just what would sum us up? I was going along the lines of the lines of the Barca motto ‘mes que en club’ but I tell you what, you may be onto something here.

  • Joe McHugh says:

Prepare for grief over that suggestion fozza!

Having said that the four leaf clover badge/crest is a little bit vague for Celtic.

I believe it was created in the early 1900s after the club won four trophies in a season.

The crest never appeared on the jersey until the mid seventies.

JCGE will forever be associated with the season just ended, Neil Lennon and The Green Brigade but it’s best to leave it as that stamp in the club’s evolving history.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

Just Cant Get Enough is etched on the heart and soul of every Bhoy and Ghirl, and stuck in the throat like a chicken bone of every ger, other teams can use it but it would be impossible to take it from us after this season
      LENNON TO THE CORE.

  • fozza says:

I guess only having sung it for one season, and then having it put on the badge, would be a bit premature!

However I have to say that if there was one phrase taken from our endless list of songs, old or new, then i think ‘I just Can’t Get Enough’ is now my favourite.

I think i just got a bit over excited after a season which brought back the thunder and was labelled as ‘just the beginning’.

I’ll come back in ten years!

  • liam says:

Joe, i think you need to swot up on your history a little bit and think why Liverpool fans feel an affiliation with Celtic, It goes back to the friendly played between Liverpool and celtic, following Hillsborough when Youll Never Walk Alone was sung emotionally by both sets of fans having been Liverpools and Liverpools song only for many years, since then a mutual respect has grown and grown between the two clubs, with Fields of anfield Road as much a pointer to Celtic aswell as Liverpool. Not really helped by pointless articles like yours..

  • Bhoy oh bhoy says:

Calm down, calm down! This shouldn’t be about 2 clubs ‘stealing’ songs from eachother. This is just 2 brilliant, respected and proud sets of fans sharing ways of celebrating their beloved club. Celtic and Liverpool ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’… and there’s enough to go around! Hail hail! Y.N.W.A.

    • luke1971 says:

who cares , im happy celtic and liverpool share songs. celtic and liverpool are friends. we are all neil lennon.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

Easily the 2 best sets of fans in britain.

  • rafa says:

    Didn’t celtic invent football too?

    • Thecelticblog says:

Aye we did, Rafa destroyed it.

      • larsson7 says:

not but we were the first ones to win the most important cup of them all… hail hail … but i do love Liverpools fans …we’re all related to irish roots and the docklands

  • Mac says:

I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

Two of the best supported, vocal and easily recognised clubs in football singing good songs that reflect the love they have for their clubs.

Great stuff, don’t forget immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Me ? I JCGE and I know we will Never walk alone.

Hail hail to all of you and keep the great songs coming !

dont need to say any more than this really…

  • Chris says:

Are we seriously now arguing about who did what first? I mean REALLY?!

At the end of the day does it matter?

Liverpool FC is the love of my life…and because of the special bond between clubs, Celtic FC is, and will always be, my best friend. YNWA.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

I think nearly everyone agrees theres no problem, LIVE AND LET LIVE! if not your supporting the wrong team, we’re not “them mob”!
