Dundee United interested in freed former Celt

Willo Flood Celtic newsDundee United and Aberdeen have expressed an interest in signing former Celt Willo Flood.

The midfielder was freed by Middlesbrough last week as Tony Mowbray embarks on a cash saving exercise.

Flood missed the majority of last season after dislocating his knee but worked his way back into the ‘Boro side that escaped relegation.

The 28-year-old enjoyed the best football of his career during an 18 month loan spell at Dundee United with ‘Boro boss Tony Mowbray admitting that it was a financial decision to free the Dubliner.

“Willo has been unfortunate in that he hasn’t really had a chance to impress while I’ve been here,” Mowbray admitted.

“He has been very unlucky with injuries and his contract has come to an end just when we are looking to reduce costs.

“I’m aware that Willo started very well when he came here and I can see exactly what assets he brings to the team.

“But I am looking to put my own stamp on the team and I need to create space in the squad to enable me to bring in my own players.

Peter Houston has already contacted Flood about a return to Tannadice with Craig Brown also interested in Gordon Strachan’s final Celtic signing although it’s expected that Flood will want to continue his career in England.
