Neil Lennon loved the iconic Broony moment

|

Scott Brown Celtic newsNeil Lennon has revealed that he loved the Broony but wouldn’t pick his captain for a quiz team!

Brown was signed from Hibs for £4m in 2007 to replace Lennon in Gordon Strachan’s side but it’s been the appointment of Lennon as manager that has brought out the best in the midfielder.

Lennon had no hesitation in handing Brown the captain’s armband and has been rewarded by his captain galvanising a new look squad into contention for the SPL title.

A mutial admiration society exists between the two Celts but the hoops manager draws a firm line in the sand with his captain when it comes to matters of the mind.

“Broony’s a good boy, although I wouldn’t have him in my quiz team,” the Celtic boss laughed.

“He’s played a big part in galvanizing the dressing room and made all of the new boys feel very welcome. He does a lot behind the scenes that people don’t know about. He’s been a real captain. I think Scott is changing, he is maturing.

“We’ve all had spats and episodes in our careers and again I won’t discourage that. If you’ve got a bit of devil in you then leave it, let the player deal with it.

“I think Broony has done that this season, more than any other season. He still has his moments. I thought the Diouf episode was humour more than anything else.

“He scored a fantastic goal and he just stood there with his arms raised. For the Celtic fans it’s an iconic moment of the season.

“I see a bit of myself in him. Scott takes a lot of abuse and I think he handles that well.”

Brown is the only player to have remained a first pick sibce Lennon took over from Tony Mowbray last season.

Throughout his 13 turbulent months in charge the hoops boss has always been able to know what he can expect from the former Hibs midfielder.

With midfield the strongest area of the Celtic side Lennon is delighted that Biram Kayal, Joe Ledley, Ki Sung Yeung and Kris Commons have a role model to compare themselves with.

“Scott has absolutely stepped up to the plate for me,” Lennon added. “He’s exceeded all expectations and grown into the job very quickly. I think he’s playing with great maturity.

“Even in the eight games when we were in temporary charge he was magnificent, he really took games by the scruff of the neck.

“Throughout the season I think he’s been very consistent and I think that gets overlooked a lot.

“Some people make more of his personality and aggressive style of play, whatever you want to call it but I think that’s become less and less relevant. Now you are seeing the real quality footballer that he is.

“He manipulates the ball very well and can pass it better than a lot of people give him credit for. He has a phenomenal engine. Scott’s got a year left of his contract at the end of the season. So we’ll sit down with his advisors and try and hopefully agree a new deal for him.

“Scott’s only 25, he’s got his best years ahead of him.”
