Javier Hernandez Manchester UnitedMexico beat Guatamala 2-1 last night to book a semi-final place with Honduras in the Gold Cup.

Efrain Juarez completed his fourth game of the competition as the Mexican´s overcame the loss of an early goal to maintain their 100% record as they defend the trophy that they won in 2009.

There was over 78,000 in the New Meadowlands stadium in New Jersey but the majority of them were shocked in the fouth minute when Carlos Ruiz opened the scoring for the underdogs.

It took Mexico until the 48th minute to equalise when Aldo De Nigris scrambled the ball into the net with Manchester United´s Javier ´Chicharito´ Hernandez scoring with a cheeky flick in the 66th minute to win the match.

“This team knows it can win against any adversity if it wants to be a champion,” Mexican coach Jose Manuel de la Torre said. “We knew that it was a difficult match and we would have a difficult opponent.

“The early goal complicated things. We didn’t anticipate it. That gave the rival more strength and that picks at you little by little but the team didn’t panic and was able to resolve the issue.”

Juarez and his team-mates will now travel to Houston on Wednesday to face Honduras who are of course without the injured Emilio Izaguirre.

Honduras defeated Costa Rica on penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the last four of the competition.

  • John McVey says:

You’ve got to ask the obvious question, if Juarez is an ever present in the Mexico team, why can’t he fit into the Celtic first team set up?

    • conor88 says:

lenny dont like him cause he aint disceplined enough the talent is clearly there for all too see

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

If by “disciplined enough” conor88 means his off the field habits have an effect on his training….
    that’s what I’ve heard as well…..

  • paranoidandroid says:

If that’s case, then maybe it’s part of NL’s job to make him more disiplined.
There’s a good chance that we’ll loose some of our most talented midfield players soon or in the near future.
Are the board going to replace them with better players than Juarez ? I dont think so.
Give the guy a fair go. He’s been treated as if he ran over NL’s dog all season- despite being the only decent Celtic player when the going was really tough.

  • paranoidandroid says:

Ooops, I should have said: “…really tough in a couple of games at the beginning of the season”, to finish that comment.

  • CelticMike says:

Another ‘Riordan’ then, talented but won’t get a game because he’s an arse.

  • Joe says:

Take a deep breath guys!! There are obviously reasons he didn’t feature too often. Lennon did a good job considering he was subjected to a season of death threats. I wouldn’t pay too muct attention to the Scottish media input. We all know what their agenda is! Don’t be suckered in.

  • CORRIB04 says:

if Efrain isnt considered Celtic material by Lenny then he must have good reason.
    Good enough for me.

    Trust in Lenny.

  • Steven1888 says:

I read a rumour that he wanted to leave as soon as we were knocked out of Europe so stopped putting in the effort in training.

Only rumours but would explain a lot.
