Willie McStay Celtic news

Former Celtic coach Willie McStay is expected to be named as assistant manager to Dietmar Hamann at Stockport County.

McStay was in charge of Ross County for nine games last season before being axed by Director of Football George Adams who brought his boy Derek back to Victoria Park in the summer to reunite the Adams family after less than a year apart.

Stockport were relegated from the Football League at the end of last season but have shown their ambition under new ownership by appointing Hamann as manager last week.

In recent seasons the club has been dogged by financial problems with Neil Lennon turning down the opportunity to take over at Edgerly Park two years ago following Tony Mowbray’s arrival at Celtic .

Gary Ablett, Paul Simpson and Ray Mathias have all been in the managers chair over the last two seasons but the appointment of Hamann indicates the ambition of the new owners.

After being appointed as manager last week Hamann said: “The club is probably where it shouldn’t be- it belongs in the Football League.

“We will try to bring a smile back to the punters’ faces when they come to the ground and to send them back home with a smile will be what we are trying to achieve.

“Time is very thin. The quicker you bring players in the better so we will be trying to recruit players over the next few days.

“A good player can play at any level and we look for players with the right attitude who will put the team first and obviously put the club first.

“We will make sure they have the same enthusiasm as all the people here to bring the club back into the Football League.

“If there’s a possibility to bring players in from other clubs whether it’s on loan or permanent we will try to do that and utilise every angle we’ve got.”

As well as spending 15 years at Celtic McStay was in charge of Sligo Rovers for two seasons and spent eight months at Ujpest Dozsa during the 2009/2010 season.

Not, perhaps, the club I would have wished for Willie….but if he’s happy with it that’s the main thing.
Couldn’t meet a nicer bloke and I wish him all the luck in the world….I think he might need it…..
    All the best Willie…

Very best wishes to Willie McStay, I’ll be keeping a close eye on the results. I’m sure he will learn much from Hamann as well, looks a very promising partnership in the making.
