Kris Commons Celtic newsKris Commons has set himself a 20 goal target- for each of the next three seasons.

The £300,000 transfer fee paid to Derby in January for the midfielder was one of the best pieces of business done by Neil Lennon in a season of smart transfer market activity.

Commons netted within ten minutes of his debut against Aberdeen at Hampden and went on to find the net 14 times in 21 games including 11 goals in the SPL.

John Hartson claimed that a striker should be able to score 20 times a season for Celtic but confident Commons believes that he can notch that magic number from midfield.

“On the back of last season I’ll be looking to get to the 20 mark,” He revealed. “If I could get 60 goals over the next three years then I would be very happy.

“I came to Celtic to win silverware and I’ve had a little taste with the Cup, but I want to win the league. It’s my job and my duty to do that.

“When I play with better players I can’t help but improve, there is more to come from me. Hopefully I can pick up from where I left off last season.”

Commons confident approach to the game is a breath of fresh air and stems from seeing his brother Spencer being robbed of a career in the game through injury.

The Scotland internationalist appreciates the opportunities that he has and is looking ahead to the best years of his career.

He added: “I’m motivated because I think about retirement. I’m 27 and I know I only have three more years at my peak, these will be my best years.

“I will be at my peak between 27 and 30 and I will playing for a massive club like Celtic. I have a lot to play for, but it could only be for those three years.

“Not being able to play at a level I know I’m capable of scares me.

“These need to be the best footballing years of my life. I am a father of two and I want to leave my kids as many memories as I can – to show them what I was all about. Hopefully one day my son can look back and say: ‘Yeah, my dad was all right’.

“My brother Spencer had to quit the game with a bad injury and that drives me on too. He is an electrician now, but he could have been a great player. When I get a bit of extra cash I treat him and his life could really have been completely different.”

  • The next three years, that sounds like his heart & mind is made up about his future commitment to the club….

I like to hear those sort of noises, un- like a few other players at the club demanding pay rises etc I’ve not heard a peep coming from Commons doing like wise, if there is one player who deserves a financial reward for his effort & contribution from last season, then its without a doubt this lad…

He scored many goals in such a short space of time all the while settling into a new club & style of football yet he hit the ground running & never looked back, the goals he scored also many of them where vital game changer’s….

If we can get another 14 goals of him this season coming, then from a midfielder’s point of view that is good innings indeed….

I think if you subtract Stokey’s penalty conversions then him & Commons on on a par with goals netted, a that is Stokey’s with an extra half a season under his belt over Commons….

Stokey’s is another story, I was sort of hoping we would have moved him on this summer, don’t like his attitude I don’t ….

I think Commons will end up falling into the Larsson & lubo category, cheap purchases with a tremendous return in value for money spent….

The sooner the new season gets up & running the better, its been a long drawn out couple of months with no Celtic & Paradise, weekends just not the same no matter what you try & substitute those days with.. SIGHHHHHHH 80/

On reading the blog you have given me wee idea for the Spl’s top goalscorer next season (Commons), I’ll need to find out what the odds are with him at the bookies….

I’m going to stick a £hundred quid on with a long term bet also for us winning 10 in a row starting with this season coming, I don’t know the odds yet, need to enquire with my Mum to find out where the bookies stand on that one, (She’s a Ladbrokes manageress)….

I think it’s time we found a song for Kris Commons, he deserves the recognition….

    Forever Celtic

    Hail Hail
