internet Celtic newsRangers have struck a deal with the Daily Record to show live coverage of their Champions League qualifier with Malmo to overseas fans on the newspapers website.

The announcement is another step closer towards legal streams of matches being made available to fans online.

At the moment all domestic matches and official UEFA games are subject to blanket television contracts that prevent them from being made available on the internet on a game by game basis to home based supporters.

Fans outside of the UK and Ireland are able to watch Celtic matches live through channel 67 with pressure growing to off the same service to supporters within the UK and Ireland.

The English Premier League are involved in a costly legal battle with the European Union over whether Premiership matches can be bought by UK residents through foreign rights owners.

English football chiefs are fearful that the availability of Saturday afternoon matches could decimate attendances and effect their position when negotiating future domestic television deals.

Rather than taking out a subscription to Rangers TV overseas fans can pay $9.50US to the Daily Record and watch the match on a one off basis.

The success, or otherwise, of the venture could open the door to future broadcasts although all domestic competitions are sold on a collective with the SPL having a number of contracts to beam their matches live around the world.

Announcing the deal Rangers commercial chief Ali Douglas said: “Once again Rangers are leading the way in the digital media field and we are delighted to team up with the Daily Record to provide our overseas supporters with live coverage of the Malmo game.”

The Record will be hoping that the venture will generate more traffic to their website as well as raising revenue. In common with all newspapers suffering from declining circulation and advertising revenue the Record are keen to start generating money online.

I remember they claimed to be the first to have internet tv also, the year after Celtic had it! What are they like.

Why pay for a stream when the exact same stream quality is available for free?

Uefa’s streams are shocking – need to be mad to pay for it when you can get picture perfect streams that dont freeze/buffer for free.

What are the best sites for free streams? I use my PS3 and many won’t work but a couple do. Any help much appreciated.

I was expecting to read about how the Record had agreed to help R*****s’ bid for four-in-row by printing lies about Neil Lennon.

it seems we are going down a road where a teams fans who live in the same country CAN’T watch there own team if they can’t get to the match. yes it might be a money maker but just how much? it’ll be a small fee & poor quality. i expect the EPL teams will win out in the end. football in europe is geared around the big 4 countries.

If clubs are allowed to negotiate their own online tv deals then the game is a bogey for Wigan, Blackburn, Fulham and the rest who live off the £40m/year subsidy of playing in the same league as Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

In Spain they do their own thing and most clubs get a couple of million euros while the big companies pour their money into Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The big clubs in England would love the same deal- it would give them a better chance of competing with Barca and Real but would leave the Premiership seriously weakened.

And the deluded hordes will still insist on call it the ‘Daily Rebel’! It’s hilarious talking to these folk with their ‘No-one likes us we don’t care’ mindset. As well as the record the beeb have also been bending over backwards to help their beloved bears over the last few years by giving them cash in screening crappy live games like cup replays against the likes of the Harry Rags.

And they still think everyone is out to desrtoy their master-race WASP culture!
