What's going on at Hibs?

Easter Road Hibs newsIt’s doubtful if Celtic have ever opened their season against a club in more turmoil than the Hibs side Neil Lennon’s side will meet on Sunday.

For the last month speculation has been rife that Colin Calderwood will quit the manager’s chair with the only debate being over whether he’ll end up as assistant manager of Birmingham City or Nottingham Forest.

Former Celts Liam Miller and Derek Riordan have scarpered off to Australia and Germany with perhaps the biggest insult arriving yesterday when St Johnstone outbid the Edinburgh club for Cillian Sheridan.

The striker had spent over a week training with Hibs and was wanted by Calderwood. CSKA Sofia were keen to send Sheridan out on loan but when it came to it St Johnstone were able to outbid Hibs with the much travelled striker being reunited with Derek McInnes.

Calderwood was forced to put a brave face on it as he told the Hibs website: “I want to focus on players who want to be at Hibernian and that can bring more potency to our attack.

“I have other preferred options for strikers, and hope to conclude a deal over the next few days.

“We know Cillian has other options and wish him all the best at whatever club he chooses to join.”

In recent seasons no SPL club has brought in more money than Hibs with Scott Brown, Kevin Thompson, Gary O’Connor, Steven Whittaker, Steven Fletcher and Anthony Stokes bringing in over £15m.

O’Connor and Ivan Sproule could line up against Celtic on Sunday but with their club in disarray, an unpopular kick-off time and live television coverage of the match support for the Hi-bees is likely to be thin on the ground.
