Crossing the twitter line

Twitter Celtic NewsLuis Enrique is poised to become the second twitter ‘victim’ at Newcastle with Liverpool preparing a £10m bid for the left-back.

Enrique was fined two weeks wages for criticising the club on twitter with the social networking site paving the way for Joey Barton’s exit from St James’ Park.

Bizarrely Barton is quoted at 3/1 by some bookies to join Celtic but it’s unlikely that Peter Lawwell will be piling in to that price!

The former Manchester City midfielder, who served a 74 day jail term in 2008, now appears to be picking his fights on twitter rather than the traditional battlegrounds of pubs and nightclubs.

To an ever increasing twitter following Barton has given chapter and verse of what’s going on at Newcastle forcing the club to cut their losses by offering him a free transfer.

Responding to his latest breach of club discipline he tweeted: “Ha ha the inevitable, 2 weeks wages fine has just arrived. Needless to say it shall be appealed forthwith.”

The local newspaper, the Evening Chronicle, had earlier printed a string of allegations about Barton’s attitude and behaviour during the friendly defeat at Leeds on Sunday with the player responding to head on.

He tweeted: ‘If the club want to put out all these false statements via the Chronicle, then let them do that. Everyone here knows, I speak the truth…..

“I also have too much respect for my teammates and the fans, to get in a tit for tat war with them. I have too much self-worth and dignity”.

As the fall out between club and player grew more and more public Barton was revelling in the attention.

He tweeted: “Somewhere in those high echelons of NUFC, they have decided, I am persona non grata.

“I am on a free but the honour of wearing those B+W stripes, surpasses that. One day the board might realise what the shirt signifies HONOUR and PRIDE. Thanks for your continued support.

“If only we as players could tell the fans exactly how it is, without them above fining us lots of money. There will be a time and a place.

“Again it would be left to those magnificent fans to pick up the remnants of their once great football club.”
