Hillsborough Justice Campaign Dogged campaigning by the families of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster has forced the government to revisit the tragedy.

The deaths of 96 Liverpool fans attending the 1989 FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest has never been investigated satisfactorily with the police, government and football authorities accused of covering up information about what happened on the day.

An online petition has gathered more than 110,000 signatures forcing the government to re-open the issue and release documents that have previously been kept private.

Liverpool fans have kept the issue open by chairing their own enquiry into the disaster and are now pushing for full disclosure of what happened at the Sheffield Wednesday ground and the cover up that followed the disaster.

Professor Phil Scraton, lead investigator on the Hillsborough panel, has set out his demands for disclosure.

He said: “Our terms of reference are absolutely clear- full disclosure is what we’re about.

“The important aspect of full disclosure is that the families are the first to receive material from the panel and that it then goes more broadly into the public domain.”

“We will write a full report that demonstrates how that which we have analysed and researched adds to public understanding of Hillsborough – in its context, its circumstances and its aftermath.”

Steve Rotherham, MP for Liverpool Walton added: “They’re forced to think seriously now about putting the issue on the agenda – more than 100,000 people have demanded justice.

“And it’s not just scousers, it’s people  from all over the country who are demanding to see these files out in the open.”
