Martin O'Neill Sunderland newsIt was just like old times at The Stadium of Light this afternoon as a dramatic injury time goal from Seb Larsson gave Sunderland a dramatic win over Blackburn Rovers.

With the scores tied at 1-1 Larsson, wearing number 7, send a fierce 25 yard free kick over the Rovers wall and into the net at Paul Robinson’s right hand post as O’Neill lept around on the touchline.

The points lift Sunderland out of the bottom relegation zone with just their third win of the season and comes on the back of defeats against Wigan and Wolves.

“I would have given a lot for that,” the former Celtic boss admitted. “It was surreal. really surreal, just to get three points on the board is immense.

“Having lost the game here last time out against Wigan in the circumstances in which they did, and then to go to Wolves and miss the penalty and then lose the game.

“It’s only a win, it only gives us a win. We have a million miles to go, but in terms of restoration of confidence, it was great.”

Blackburn took the lead in a scrappy first half through Simon Vukcevic but as the second half developed the visitors dropped further and further back as Sunderland chased an equaliser.

With six minutes of normal time left to play David Vaughan brought the home fans to their feet with with a sizzling 25 yard drive that brought the scores level before Larsson settled the points in injury time.

The win adds to the pressure that Blackburn boss Steve Kean is under with reports this morning suggesting that the clubs’ bankers are becoming concerned about a cash flow problem and are demanding that the clubs’ owners invest money promised during their takeover of the club.
