Callum McGregor Celtic newsCeltic’s youth side return to the Mercedes Benz Cup today to face Lechia Gdask at 12.35.

Yesterday Celtic lost all three of their matches in Group B to Lazio, Hamburg and Freiburg after a nightmare journey from Glasgow.

Weather delays at Glasgow and Amsterdam airports meant that the Celtic squad never reached Stuttgart until almost midnight and missed a training slot at the Glass Palace.

In their opening match Celtic were 2-0 down to Lazio before Darnell Fisher pulled a goal back, in the next match with Hamburg Callum McGregor opened the scoring before the German side ended Celtic’s qualification hopes with two late goals.

Freiburg looked too strong for Celtic and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners to join Hamburg as the group qualifiers.

Working out the exact format of the tournament is beyond my basic grasp of German with the tournament splitting up from Group’s A and B into Group’s 1 and 2.

Celtic beat Stuttgart 3-1 with goals coming from McGregor, Bahrudin Atajic and Joe Chalmers and now face Lechia Gdansk. And probably one other match as well, at least!

No doubt there is some logic somewhere in the format but it seems as easy to explain as the SPL split and the annual disputes over three home or away matches.

If anyone can offer an explanation of the format from CLICKING HERE I’d be grateful, if not it’s probably best to just enjoy watching the matches.

Glad we got a win on the board, Stuttgart had won 2 of their previous games so hopeful of a decent finish to the tourney
