Craig Whyte Rangers tax caseOne of the favourite myths about the crisis at Rangers is the view that HMRC are being unusually severe with the cash-strapped club.

Last week’s announcement of administration came as a surprise to some but for others the only surprise was that it took so long, or that HMRC had requested administration rather than a winding up order.

Hearts had a winding up order from HMRC when Rangers were put into administration. If any club was entitled to question the motives and priorities of HMRC it would be the Edinburgh side.

After their unconvincing media conference last Thursday at Ibrox Duff and Phelps provided further information prior to Rangers defeat from Kilmarnock on Saturday.

With no sign of any cut-backs caused by administration it seems to be business as usual with Rangers attempting to register the signing of Daniel Cousin on wages that would go a long way to funding a full team for most of their SPL rivals.

Duff and Phelps revealed that some of the missing documentation had come to light but more tellingly they set the record straight on the relationship between Rangers and HMRC.

Paul Clark, of Duff and Phelps, said: “The message from HMRC is that they would like to work with us to make sure Rangers Football Club survives.

“Their work before administration, it is fair to say, was very, very supportive of the club. If you set aside the big tax case, they agreed several pay arrangements which the club didn’t meet.

“There’s only so long you can fund a loss-making business through non-payment of taxes. The position was unsustainable. There comes a point where HMRC have to say enough is enough.”
