Graeme Souness Rangers news

The man who introduced David Murray to Rangers fears that his old club are about to be wiped off the footballing map.

Graeme Souness was manager of Rangers in 1988 when he put Murray in touch with Lawrence Marlborough who was looking to sell his stake in the club after two years of heavy spending to fund Souness’ plans.

Murray provided Souness with the funds to start the club on the route to nine-in-a-row although the former Liverpool skipper had quit Ibrox for Anfield with Murray in his prime.

The big spending days continued under Walter Smith and Dick Advocaat before financial reality began to set in under Alex McLeish although Murray sanctioned another £20m of spending for Smith in 2008.

With new owner Craig Whyte trying to put his £1 investment into administration Souness spoke with sadness about the change in fortunes at his old club.

I think they will go into administration and reappear as Rangers 2012 or something, sadly,” he told talkSPORT.

It is just a tragedy that has happened to them. I think they will come out of it. I think there will be an addition to the name, Rangers whatever.

They will come out without their debt and start again.”

With HMRC and Whyte attempting to put the club into administration the future is much less certain that Souness claims.

Liquidation looks increasingly likely with both sides taking entrenched views leaving different supporters groups to attempt to re-launch a club that is unlikely to be able to afford the upkeep of Ibrox Stadium or the luxury of the Murray Park training facility.
