SFA football newsKenny Shiels has been handed a touchline ban for the opening SPL game of the season against Club 12.

The Kilmarnock boss has been handed the ban for comments made ahead of Celtic’s title clincher at Rugby Park last season.

Discussing Kilmarnock’s League Cup win over Celtic the previous month the Killie boss said: “They (Celtic) are coming to win a title, that’s their foremost thought, but human nature takes over and they will want to get revenge, there is no question of that.

“And I hope we have a strong referee because that’s vitally important. They didn’t have one last Sunday and it favoured Celtic considerably. So hopefully we have a strong referee.”

Shiels has also been given a one match ban suspended until the end of the 2012/13 season.

George Salmond had refereed the Celtic v St Johnstone match which Neil Lennon’s side won 2-0 to set up the title clincher at Kilmarnock.

The visitors made no mistake at Rugby Park brushing Shiels team aside to race into a 4-0 lead at half-time before scoring two late goals to kick off the title winning celebrations.

Rule 68 of the revised SFA Rule Book states: “No recognised football body, club, official, Team Official or other member of Team Staff, player or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA, shall in an interview, a ‘blog’ on the internet, on a social networking or micro-blogging site, or in any other manner calculated or likely to lead to publicity (i) criticise the performance(s) of any or all match official(s) in such a way as to indicate bias or incompetence on the part of such match official; or (ii) make remarks about such match official(s) which impinge on his character.”

  • Looks like Ally missed the fast track train again then. Hope he isn’t making a habit of it. I would like to see him sanctioned before he is liquidated – nae team, nae league.

Just a coincidence that Terry Butcher, who in my mind made the most derogitory remarks of the season and Ally McCoist, who made the most inflamitory comments of the season, regards, in one instance, referee’s and the other the SPL, that have both escaped sanctions and also they both have shared a history inplaying for the same team.
