SPL Celtic newsThe SPL are set to announce details of the new look u-20 league designed to bridge the gap between u-19 football and first team level.

Celtic won the old reserve title eight years running before it was brought to a halt and have won the double of SPL title and SFA Youth Cup for the last three seasons.

Matches in the u-20 league will be played on Tuesday evening at senior football grounds with Celtic previously using Airdrie’s Shyberry Stadium for home matches.

Only matches involving Aberdeen, Ross County or Inverness Caley Thistle will be played in the afternoons which helps to establish a routine for the fixtures and should provide some extra profile rather than being played on Saturday mornings or lunchtimes.

The switch to Tuesday nights will also allow first team managers and coaches to keep tabs on the development of their players.

Crucially the u-20 league will allow for two u-21 players to be used plus a goalkeeper of any age with the final details still to be rubber stamped.

This would allow Celtic to use Lucasz Zaluska in goals with players like James Keatings and Paul Slane able to play alongside the more recognisable u-20 squad.

Clubs will also be able to use five substitutes in the games which will allow upto 16 players to be in action.

The first chance for the Celtic support to see the u-20 squad in action is likely to be in the Partick Thistle tournament next weekend which could also feature other players such as Morten Rasmussen and Josh Thompson.

Celtic will kick-off the tournament against Partick Thistle at 12.45 on Saturday July 21 and will face either Airdrie or Everton the following day.

On Saturday July 28 a Celtic XI will travel to Belfast to face Cliftonville.
