Kris Commons scoresKris Commons is hoping that his goal against Helsingborg is a down payment on a Champions League place.

The former Derby man has recaptured the firm that he showed after joining Celtic in January 2011 with three key goals from five matches this season.

With less than two minutes on the clock Commons positioned himself perfectly to volley a great cross from Georgios Samaras into the turf and beyond the Helsingborg keeper.

Commons scored 14 times in 4 months after joining Celtic but hopes that his goal against Helsingborg puts those other efforts in the shade.

“If we do manage to get through to the group stage I’m certain that will be the most important goal I’ve ever scored,” he admitted.

“It’s brilliant for me that I can play my part but the job’s only half done, we need to go back to Celtic Park and make sure we wrap this game up.

“The group stages have been our aim all through pre-season and that’s why we played against the likes of Ajax, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

“We took these games on to get us prepared to play against this sort of opposition.

“When you’re away from home you need to dig deep and be mentally strong and I think we showed that in Helsingborg.

“That sort of performance certainly gives you confidence and I also think the Helsinki game was a big confidence booster.

“Playing friendlies against Inter Milan and Real Madrid were good for us and we gave a good account of ourselves.

“Those games gave us the experiences you need to come to these grounds and get results and our boys are turning into men at the minute.

“We’ve half a job done here. Now it’s time to get back to Celtic Park and wrap it up.”
