SFA football newsSome of Celtic’s top academy prospects are in Moscow this week on international duty at the Valerie Ivanov Tournament.

Sam Wardrop, Jack Breslin, Aiden McIlduff and Connor McLaren started in the 2-0 win over Turkey yesterday with Aiden Nesbitt and Steven Boyd appearing as second half substitutes.

Nine Celts were named in Mark Wotte’s 18 strong squad for the tournament with Scotland in the same group as Latvia and the Ukraine.

Scotland beat Latvia 1-0 on Monday, with Celtic’s Ciaran Lafferty scoring the only goal, meaning that a draw tomorrow against the Ukraine would take Wotte’s side into the final which is likely to be against Russia.

McLaren and Kyle Spence of Crystal Palace scored the goals that beat Turkey with Wotte delighted by the way the squad has performed in the tournament.

“We played excellently in the first half,” the coach said after the winner over Turkey. “We passed well and scored two quick goals. We should really have capitalised on our dominance in the first half by scoring more goals.

“Turkey are a good footballing nation with many young people playing the game. To get a result against them is very encouraging.

“We made nine changes to the starting line-up and I was delighted with our central defenders Jack Breslin and Adam Hodge. Devlin McKay made his debut in goal today and did very well.

“If we get at least a draw on Friday, I think we will be playing Russia in the final on Saturday.”
