Tony Watt Celtic newsBilly Stark will turn to Tony Watt as Scotland attempt to muscle their way into the u-21 European Championships.

Scotland go to Austria tomorrow needing a win to finish runners-up to Holland and hope to qualify as one of the best placed runners-up.

Leigh Griffiths and Jonny Russell took an hour to break down Luxembourg on Thursday night with Watt scoring the final goal of the game from the penalty spot in a 3-0 win.

Stark left Watt out on his first squad of the season but after a late call up against Belgium and his disply against Luxembourg the former Celtic midfielder is full of praise for the 18-year-old Celt.

“He was like a one-man demolition squad,” the Scotland u-21 boss said about Watt’s substitute appearance. “He gathered the ball and was really positive.

“We knew all about Tony. In Slovenia with the Under-19s he was very inconsistent and that will still be there because that’s the nature of front players, they want to go and run with the ball.

“But he’s been consistent with the chances he’s had so far this season and he’s a great weapon to have. He’s scored a lot of goals at the younger levels and a lot of that was to do with his power and physique.

“I have been impressed with his finishing technique. The one at Inverness is typical of him in that he runs from halfway but I saw him in the NextGen series last year and in both games against Man City he was outstanding. Against Barcelona at Celtic Park he scored a great goal.

“Neil Lennon has been on top of him to be a better trainer and better pro but he’s not that different from a lot of young pros and he’s certainly given Celtic and us cause for encouragement with the way he has started this season.”
