Mikael Lustig Celtic newsMikael Lustig has been voted into the Champions League team of the week by the prestigious goal.com website.

The Swedish defender was outstanding in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow highlighted by the pass to Gary Hooper for the opening goal of the match.

With sixteen matches to choose from Lustig has earned his place in the team of the week ahead of right-backs from Barcelona, Real Madrid and four Premiership sides.

Joe Hart of Manchester City is the only Englishman in the side after his outstanding display against Borussia Dortmund.

Explaining Lustig’s inclusion goal stated: “Mikael Lustig, who takes the right-back berth following his rampaging performance down the flank for Celtic, sending in a cross to put the side on their way to an eventual success in Russia.

Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi from Celtic’s next opponents Barcelona earn a place in the side with Messi selected as sole striker with Real Madrid’s Ronaldo selected in an attacking right midfield role.

Messi’s contribution was described as: “The Argentine may not have scored again, but nonetheless put in a masterful performance, providing assists for both of his side’s goals in Lisbon.”

Lustig came back into the Celtic side on Saturday at Motherwell following a knock to Adam Matthews.

Neil Lennon signed the 25-year-old from Rosenborg as a free agent in January to compete with Matthews for the right-back slot with both players capable of playing in a variety of defensive positions with Matthews expected to be available for Sunday’s home match with Hearts.
