SFA football newsAnna Signeul has made an outspoken attack on referee Bibiana Steinhaus after Scotland’s ladies team lost out to Spain in a European Championships play-off.

“It’s sad when referees decide these kind of games,” Signeul told BBC Scotland after the match.

Scotland looked on course for a place in the finals until Spain were awarded an injury time penalty.

Despite missing the penalty the Spaniards scored with the last kick of extra-time to edge through on a 4-3 aggregate.

“I must say that I think we had the referees against us again,” Signeul claimed. “It was in over time when they scored and we should have had a penalty at home.

“I’m lost for words. All I can say is that I am very, very proud of all of the players. We had a fantastic campaign and I don’t think we deserved to end it like this.”

Signeul’s claims follow on from the recent criticism of referee Florian Meyer in the Wales v Scotland World Cup qualifier in Cardiff.

Asked about a Steven Fletcher ‘goal’ that was disallowed Levein said: “Everybody who watches it can make up their own mind about whether it was a good or poor decision by the officials.

“I can only relay my feelings, and I am extremely angry about this happening to us again.

“We have been subject to a couple of really poor decisions and it has a huge effect on our chances of qualifying.”

It remains to be seen if the SFA will reprimand Signeul in the same way that any club manager would be asked to explain similar comments about match officials.
