Simon Ferry Swindon newsPaolo di Canio couldn’t mask his anger after Swindon’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat by non-league Macclesfield.

Four days after pushing Aston Villa all the way in the Capital One Cup di Canio watched his side tumble out of the FA Cup with barely a whimper.

In January he had announced that he wanted his players honoured after unluckily going out of the FA Cup to Wigan but after losing to Macclesfield he ordered his players to report for training at 7.30am on Sunday.

I would like to fine my players,” he explained. “But it may not be possible because they have too much protection.

When I tell players they are average they get angry, but that was the case here. Now the club has to say sorry to everybody because they have damaged themselves.

For three days after Villa I was happy. Now I am angry. On Sunday at 7.30am we will be training at Liddington and Di Canio will be the first to arrive.

I know how to manage my players. Sometimes they think they are Barcelona players, but they are not.”

One player exempted from criticism was Simon Ferry with the former Celt taking on the captain’s armband.

“I think, to be honest, during the training sessions every single day he is one that gives his best,” di Canio said about the midfielder. “He is an important player, he will be in the future.

“He always gives his best, he is a professional guy and this is why he deserves to have the armband and that satisfaction.

“Now he has been here three-and-a-half years and he deserves it because he wears a Swindon shirt with pride and with honour and he deserves to wear the armband.”
