John Hughes Hartlepool newsJohn Hughes endured a nightmare 5-0 home defeat on his Hartlepool debut.

With just one win from 17 matches Yogi has his hands full picking up the reigns from Neale Cooper’s disastrous time in charge.

The game was goal-less at half-time but the visitors scored five times between the 50th and 80th minutes to deny Hughes any sort of honeymoon period in his new job.

That was a real baptism of fire,” the former Livingston boss admitted. “The two things that disappointed me was how the heads went down after the first goal and obviously I’m gutted about the result; we’re better than that and we have to show a bit of pride.

“I thought the first half was good – we had a few chances and they had their keeper to thank but if one of those had gone in it might have given us something to hold on to.

“For the first thirty minutes it felt like we were playing on the crest of a wave from a new manager coming in, a lot of it was off the cuff and not by design.”

Yogi added: “We have to show more character, more fight, more togetherness to give us a foothold and give us the chance to go and sneak something.

“I understand it because of the position we’re in but talk is cheap – we have to get galvanised. We are where we are so what do we do, roll over and die? I expect us to come out fighting.”

At the other end of the table Paolo di Canio’s Swindon moved into third place with a 4-1 win at home to Yeovil.
