Mark McGhee sackedMark McGhee has been sacked, or relieved of his duties as a club statement put it, following Bristol Rovers’ 4-1 defeat at York City today.

The former Motherwell and Aberdeen manager took over at Rovers in January but leaves the club sitting second from bottom of League Two.

Within an hour of the final whistle at York Rovers chairman Nick Higgs said: “We had hoped that the appointment of Mark McGhee would give the club some stability and long term progress, but unfortunately that has not been the case.

“We have decided that we can no longer continue with the current situation and had to make the difficult decision to part company with Mark. We decided we had to act now before it was too late.”

McGhee has had little money to spend forcing him into signing Gary Kenneth, David Clarkson, Jim Paterson and former Celtic pair Adam Virgo and Derek Riordan.

Kenneth scored an own goal to open the scoring at York while Riordan has failed to score in 11 league appearances.

McGhee spent a year out of football after being sacked by Aberdeen and joined Rovers in January 2012 where his record was win 12, draw 12 and lose 20.

After a promising start to his managerial career at Reading McGhee went on to manage Leicester and Wolves before spending five years out of the game after falling foul of Alex Ferguson following the transfer of Darren Ferguson to Molineux.

Spells at Millwall and Brighton followed before he returned north of the border taking Motherwell into Europe before moving to Pittodrie where he failed to recapture the successes of his playing career.

And he could have been Celtic manager, lucky escape I think.

Didn’t realise that David Clarkson was down there. Bit of a shame, he looked like he might have had a future when he was younger.
