Barry Robson newsVancouver Whitecaps have announced that Barry Robson is to leave the club.

After making a big impression in his early days at the club Robson fell out of favour with the Canadian media suggesting that the departure was engineered by the club rather than the player.

A statement from Whitecaps president Bobby Lenarduzzi said: “We are thankful for the contributions Barry made during his time with the club.

“Unfortunately, Barry and his family never fully settled in Vancouver, and we’ve mutually decided to move in different directions. On behalf of the club, I wish Barry the very best in the next stage of his career.”

Robson said: “Thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff, fans, and media for making my experience in Vancouver enjoyable. I am now looking forward to returning home and beginning the next chapter in my career.”

The former Celtic midfielder switched to the MLS last January from Middlesbrough but is now looking for a club in the UK.

Robson had a short but dramatic time at Celtic, scoring with his first touch on his debut against Aberdeen, netting against Barcelona and playing a key role in winning the 2007/08 SPL title despite Rangers being given an extension to assist their title bid.

Paul Hartley and Robson were the unlikely duo that drove Celtic to the title on a never to be forgotten night at Tannadice as Gordon Strachan clinched 3-in-a-row.

Strachan took Robson to Middlesbrough in a £1m deal but the arrival of Tony Mowbray saw the midfielder move on to Canada.

Steady on, he was a great servant in his day. His days in Paradise are long gone though.

Still think he could do a decent job for a team over here tho he was never one who you doubted was giving his all on the park perhaps a player/ coaching role at a decent club would be good for him personally I liked the Bhoy and wish him all the best

Great player during the 2007-08 season. Will not forget his service that season along with Hartley. They skulldragged the team to the championship. Never forget that night in Aberdeen when the frying pan headed in that goal!

    Hail Hail,

I live in Vancouver and was absolutely delighted when Barry signed for the Whitecaps. Indeed he made an impression on the park initially, particularly against Beckham one night, yet that soon waned.

He was a shadow of his former self after that and actually started to do more moaning than contributing. I really wanted him to settle and play the way he can but I suspect those days are behind him.

    Good luck Barry….YNWA!!!

Yeah he will always be fondly remembered for that 2007/2008 season. Mowbray to my mind let him go too soon albeit he had been injured at the start of the 2009 season so was obviously quite happy to get shot of him, along with a few others & then promptly replaced them all with dross!!

Anyway HH to Barry and hope it all works out for him, sure he would still do a job for somebody but his time has gone as far as we are concerned.
