Solo shirt deal delights Lawwell

Peter Lawwell Celtic newsCeltic’s board of directors delivered one of the most important deals in the club’s recent history by agreeing a solo shirt sponsorship deal with Magners.

The three year deal will be welcomed by almost all supporters as for the first time in 14 years Celtic have agreed a stand alone deal.

Without doubt having the same shirt sponsor as Rangers was a major bugbear with supporters eager to differentiate as much as possible with their city rivals.

The arrival of Tennent’s as shirt sponsors was poorly received with many older supporters well aware of the employment policy that the brewers had operated across Glasgow and beyond.

In 2010 when Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon went on a mini roadshow to meet supporters the issue of shirt sponsorship was regularly brought up with many fans claiming that they’d rather the club went without the revenue from a joint shirt sponsorship.

Announcing his delight at the solo deal the Celtic chief revealed: “In the past we did have shared sponsors but these were down to circumstances rather than the plan, certainly in my time here. With Martin Bain we set off on our own but circumstances in the end took us to joint sponsors.

“We are not defined by any other club. We are Celtic and that is witnessed here today. We have our own brand, story, traditions and a powerful offering to any sponsor. Here we´ve got Magners who fit with Celtic in terms of its global aspirations.

“This is a great testament to Scottish football that we can attract such a prestigious sponsor, not only to the club but to the game. I think there is great optimism we can all take from that.”

Anything that puts yet more daylight between Celtic and that lying / cheating mob over govan way is all good to me. Magners might be owned by the Company as Tennants but to the casual observer they won’t know.

Having increased the revenue gained, now it’s over to Chico to negotiate on his own without the aid of having Celtic’s name / fans to back up his sorry low tier club.

Maybe Ticketus could stump up a few bob.
