Lennon- Doyle is the type of centre forward I really like

|

Neil Lennon news

Neil Lennon is considering a summer move for Kevin Doyle of Wolves.

The Celtic boss failed in a loan bid for the striker in January but could revive his interest at the end of the season.

Doyle’s reputation has nose-dived with Wolves league position with the Midlands club fighting relegation to League One following relegation from the Premiership last season.

That decline has cost the striker his place in the Ireland squad with former Kilmarnock striker Conor Sammon in the squad to face Sweden and Austria over the next week.

“It’s a surprise that Kevin has been left out,” Lennon said in Dublin yesterday. “I’m a big admirer of Kevin and tried to take him in January.

“He is playing in a team that has struggled this season for one reason or another. It’s Giovanni’s call on that one but I think he’s a quality player.

“I think Kevin has probably been a victim of that in terms of form, goals, whatever it is you want to call it.

“You come out of the Premier League and the Championship is such a competitive league. You have to play a certain way to adjust.

“Wolves appointed Stale Solbakken after Mick McCarthy and I’m not sure he really knew the environment that well.

“Dean Saunders has come in there and they had a very important win at the weekend.”

Asked about the player moving club Lennon diplomatically added: “That’s not for me to say. I wouldn’t want to be disrespectful to Wolves in that situation. I can’t talk about another club’s player.

“We wanted him. We felt with the run-in that we had and with Juventus on the horizon that Kevin would have been an ideal foil for the likes of Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes.”

Returning to his January interest in the player Lennon added: ”You need to look at the overall performance and what you want from him as a player. I just felt that he would have made us better.

“We might have given him a lease of life — a different sort of outlook on the game and that shot in the arm that some players need. I think he is a class player.

“Once you’ve got it, you have it. You might lose a bit of confidence here and there but it’s within his make-up and I’m sure it will come again.

“There’s no question he can get goals again, but it’s not just the goals he brings- he’s never been prolific. He is that all-round type of centre-forward that I really like.”

Bye bye hooper, this bhoy is the real deal him and stokes would be dynamite together. Come on Celtic make it happen HH

  • Kendo88 says:

I like him he would do well for us. He’s a good header of the ball and that’s something we lack in our strike force. Let’s hope Kevins wearing the hoops next season. HH

  • Althetim says:

I disagree. Doyle is shite and would add nothing.
We are trying to build a CL team. Silk purse and sows’ ear spring to mind.

    • Monti says:

Don’t agree with you m8,Doyle needs a move & prove himself again, this is the type we need, hungry players & he’s at a decent age,I would prefer him in the squad before guys like,Miku & Lassad! I would like to see us go for,Gary MacKay Steven & johnny Russell from Dundee utd,Leigh Griffiths on loan at Hibs from wolves would be a decent squad player at Celtic I believe, what do you think?

      • Althetim says:

I’d take Johnny Russell for sure. Not convinced about Griffiths – bit of a headcase. Gary M-S certainly shows promise but so do plenty of guys in our development and under 20 squads.

  • Monti says:

Would love to see this happen, would score plenty up here…GBTGB!

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

Totally agree with Allthetim….waste of money.
Set your sights higher than that Lenny…please.

  • Monti says:

The one move I would love to see is Aiden McGeady brought back,we need flair & I always liked Aiden.would anybody else like to see him back??HH!

    • mark says:

In a minute mate but won’t happen IMO, He’ll end up in England at a wigan or sunderland mid to bottom EPL team unfortunately HH

      • Jimbo102 says:

I don’t know, but I think Aiden would jump at the chance to come back. Any interview I’ve seen of him since leaving, he seems to be missing that edge and sparkle that only Celtic can give. Hail hail

  • mark says:

All the guys who think he’s shite, name a couple of strikers who are better and more importantly who would come. As monti said would score plenty up here and at least he wants to come to Celtic unlike super hooper the golden boy. HH

    • Althetim says:

The players we already have are better and should be encouraged instead of signing a mediocre player such as Doyle. Watt, Keatings and George for example. In my humble opinion.

      • mark says:

Building a CL team with Keatings and George mate maybe in a few years not now, watt needs game time and should be played up front with stokes for the remaining games of the season and we’ll see if he’s got it (i think he has ) HH

        • Althetim says:

I don’t think we will build a CL team with the likes of Doyle. As for Keatings and George, if they’re good enough they’re old enough.
I agree with you about Watt. I think he is the real deal and I’d like to see him start a run of games. Same goes for McGeough.

    • Jimbo102 says:

Although I don’t think he’s shite. here’s my list of players I’d rather see come before him.
      Zigic – Birmingham
      Rhodes – Blackburn
      Austin – Burnley
      That’s the big money
      Russell – Dundee Utd
      Mackey-Stephen – Dundee Utd
      Griffiths – Hibs
      Concalves – St Mirren
      Vigurs – Ross County
      That’s the gettables
      Hail hail

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

    Who would I have….?
    Russell…Griffiths..(and his shrink)…..
    but more importantly…
give the fringe players a chance..and never mind a few years….if you’re good enough…you’re good enough…age has nowt to do with it.
As for the guy who criticised Gary Hooper….
Despite getting next to no service from the team…Hooper continues to work his ass off for the team….and get’s no thanks for it…
No bad for a guy who wants away…..

    • Monti says:

I’ve seen Hooper play shite many times for Celtic,he is a good player but not irreplaceable.would rather see the bench with 5 or six kids on it than Miku,McCourt & Lassad,I’d also punt Rogne,I just don’t trust him on the park

  • williebhoy says:

Must admit Doyle wouldn’t be on my shopping list, 30 in September so no re-sale value, don’t remember him having any real pace (Something we badly lack) or a class finisher.

Stokes is a capable SPL level striker, not got the pace / skill to cause problems at CL standard though.

We need someone to lead the line, hold the ball up and bring others into the play. I’m sure our scouts could find someone 22-24 who would fit the bill. Plenty of scope to find such a player(s) in such as Europe and probably cheaper wages too.

Keatings is still working his way back from serious injury, needs more games, ditto with Paul George. I’d certainly be utilising Watt more though, well ahead of Miku / Lassad and more beneficial for the club in the long run.

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

Agree with williebhoy’s comments re. Doyle….
    Stokes,to me, can go anytime…over-rated IMO….
I know the guy Griffiths would come with baggage..but hopefully we would sort that….
Pound for pound…he’s the best player in the SPL so far this season.
And I did say ..Pound for pound…..

    • mark says:

Stokes given the same game time as hooper would score more goals very under rated by some of the Celtic support. HH

      • Monti says:

Totally agree,Stokes needs games & confidence, I like Hooper but I don’t want players at Celtic that dream about playing elsewhere….

  • Monti says:

Maybe we should go for Fran sandaza…i mean at least the guy would feel he could openly bless himself without someone ‘ having a word in his ear,not to).pmsl. Whoever we go for we do need a fancy Dan,creative & takes the piss a lot. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I would love to see Mark hately’s pus as his son Tom stuck one in against Sevco for the Hoops…he isn’t good enough tho! Pity!

  • Monti says:

Is it just me or does anybody else think it’s time for Izzy to go? I’ve seen enough to make my mind up,you?..

    • mark says:

Its a shame he’s never been the same since the injury at aberdeen the odd good game but nothing great, would love to give him another season because he’s very likable and I met him at Glasgow airport when we went to turin cracking guy never walked past a supporter looking for a picture unlike James forrest a zombie if ever I’ve met one very unlikable HH

    • Jimbo102 says:

Going forward he still offers something but defensively he’s dreadful. His positional sense has gone completely. I’d like to see a lot more of Gershon to se if he can make that position his. Hail hail

  • vino says:

Kevin Doyle would be a good centre forward

  • williebhoy says:

As Izzy’s strength has mainly been in getting forward, maybe worth a run with Gershon at l/b and Izzy pushed forward into Left mid…knowing he can easily drop in & cover if Gershon is over-lapping.
We certainly need more width and rely too heavily on the full backs for this.

Goodwillie would score for fun, Blackburn in disarray, slightly less baggage than Griffiths, more pace & has now tried England.

I am sure I read the other week that Zigic is on some incredible wages and due an increse..hence they want to punt.

The ex Hamilton striker now at St. Johnstone, still only early 20s…name escapes me DOH

Ryan Jack (Aberdeen) excellent player, versatile and young – a snip

Hearts have a couple worth a look and sure to be cheap too.

Definitely leave room for some younger players to step up though….McGeough /George / Keatings / Twardzic / Irvine / Watt / Herron with others like Fisher knocking on the door to replace some of the squad fillers we have & some out on loan.

    • yogI says:

How about a couple of Argentinian central Defenders and a Urugyan Centre Forward who would at the very least pushed back when being bullied by Juve defenders, and who are not without superb skill.I do agree with Williebhoy as regards the young fella Ryan Jack.He is what we are crying out for and Johnnie Russell for guile and craft cause we dont have any at present or for a long time.

    • Monti says:

Goodwillie ‘less baggage’??? Was he no up for a rape charge Ffs! I’m glad your no a judge pmsl
