Paolo di Canio has almost completed Sunderland’s escape from relegation.
A 1-0 home win over Everton today lifted the Wearsiders into 14th place six points ahead of third from bottom Wigan Athletic who lost 2-0 at West Ham.
Following last week’s dramatic 3-0 win away to neighbours Newcastle it took a strike from Stephane Sessegnon just before half time to deliver full points against Davie Moyes’ side.
Sunderland looked to be in freefall under Martin O’Neill but the controversial appointment of di Canio has halted the slide with two wins and a narrow defeat at Chelsea from three matches.
Today’s results were bad news for Aston Villa and Wigan who are now four points and seven points detached from safety with Villa travelling to Manchester United on Monday night.
Next Saturday Villa host Sunderland in what will definitely be termed a six pointer with the final day of the season, May 19 seeing Wigan host Aston Villa.
The big losers today were QPR who lost 2-0 at home to out of form Stoke City. Rangers are ten points behind fourth from bottom Aston Villa with just four wins from 34 Premiership matches all season.
QPR have one of the six highest wage bills in the division and face financial meltdown if they are relegated from the Premiership side.
The reality of Premiership promotion can be seen at Wolves and Blackburn who occupy two of the bottom five places in the Championship as they face the very real prospect of back to back relegations despite the comfort of the parachute payment from the Premiership.

Won’t be hearing any wearsiders moaning now great result last week and another today well done Di canio and also big malky winning the championship always nice to see ex celts doing the good stuff HH
He played with us for ONE season & then made up a load of rubbish “I have a leetle problem…”. Fascist scumbag.
kool story
Mark, I hope for your sake that you just don’t know anything about what people with the same beliefs as Di Canio have done in recent history. Maybe you should ask people from Spain, Chile, Argentina, El Salvador, and Nicaragua what they think of fascists and fascism.
Or maybe you think it’s okay for armies to overthrow democratically elected governments and for 1000s and 1000s of ordinary working people to “disappear”- tortured, shot, thrown out of helicopters over the ocean. How do you think their friends and families feel?
Yawn, the guy was class great footballer. couldn’t care less what his political beliefs are to many people on there high horse about this get a grip HH
Sorry, I didn’t mean to bore you or disturb your cosy view of fascism.
A lot of people in Chile loved football too, until they found themselves with a bag over their head kneeling on the pitch at the national stadium.
Perfectly put GH
di canio is probably the most skillful to play for celtic,to only play one season and still be remembered is an achievement, wish hed stayed longer.i dont care if the rags are painting him as a fascist or whatever his beliefs are,the guy was class and and a born winner
the guy was an asshole and took the piss out of the Celtic support, he had no intention of prolonging his visit at Celtic Park.
He is a feckin amigo!
Same as any player, take it you feel the same about larsson got a benefit game then fucked off ripping the hole right out the support by your reckoning HH
Larsson didn’t get a benefit game, Celtic skillfully included a farewell match in his last contract.
If no-one had turned up Larsson’s finances wouldn’t be effected, he got what was agreed in his contract- Celtic got an extra fixture out of the icon.
Thought he got a million quid from the game ?
Agree the guy was class HH
he was still a player people would pay to watch whatever his beliefs
its funny how suddenly evryone believes what the papers say about di canio,i thought noone read the papers?or do we just believe what suits?
Words from his own mouth.
his own mouth in the paper?
