Lennon: We can afford a £6m signing

Steven FletcherNeil Lennon has revealed that Celtic CAN afford to pay £6m on a single player.

The £2.5m paid for Gary Hooper and Teemu Pukki is the record fee paid for a player under Lennon with the policy very much geared towards young emerging talent.

Over the last 24 hours Celtic have been linked with Steven Fletcher with some suggestions that he could become a Celtic player for half the £12m fee that Martin O’Neill paid to bring him from Wolves.

Sunderland wouldn’t sell at that price to a Premiership club but with Gus Poyet needing to raise cash before he can bring in his own players selling Fletcher to Celtic could become an option.

“Could we afford to spend £6million for one player? Yes, we could,” Lennon admitted as he discussed a possible move for Fletcher.

“I know transfer fees change over the years but he is a youngish player still so I would imagine it might not be £6million we are talking about.

“He is a player that I think most teams in Britain would like but affordability might be a problem for us though”.

Lennon has made it known that signing a striker is his priority with the clock starting to tick towards the Champions League qualifiers in July.

Alfred Finnbogason and Leigh Griffiths have also been linked with Celtic with Lennon admitting that no talks have taken place with Sunderland over their Scotland striker.

“No, not at all, it is speculation,” the Celtic boss admitted when he was asked if contact had been made with Sunderland. “I don’t know where this story has come from, I honestly don’t.

!I don’t know why I am sitting here five minutes into my press conference answering questions on him.”

More nonsense from celtic, there is not a hope in hell of us spending £6m on 2 players never mind 1 , we need players badly I just wish the board could c that

  • Monti says:

Still think for domestic football, Celtic should sign Kris Boyd!
Just to see the look on the huns faces, if anything else 🙂
A fit Kris Boyd would score 30 a season for Celtic!

I would like to see it happen, come on Lenny, let’s have some fun with the Huns!
    Jelavic? Go get him Lenny

    • brido73 says:

Go for jellyfish from everton.get him on the cheap lenny.scored goals for a diddy hun team.score even more in the hoops.hh

    • Mark says:

      Monti mate Boyd… Honestly
The look on my face would be a picture never mind the Huns faces.

if we can afford to pay 6million for a player then why didnt peter lawwell sign finnbogason in the summer as for fletcher if we sign him now 5 years after gordon wantedto sign him it would be an admision of failure from peter lawwell

I like your thinking Monti. Would be good to noise up the Sevco 5088. 🙂
However, seriously, we have enough SPL standard players.
Not sure if Pukki or Boerigter are even SPL standard.
We spent over £4m on two strikers in the summer when one would have done. We missed a chance with Finbogasson.
Basically I aint convinced with this statement by Lennon, that we can afford a £6m player.
I think we will be shopping around the £3-4m market again.
Not sure who we will get as a striker, but I just think Finbogasson and or Fletcher are out our price range now.
Also read that Lennon stated that the January signings are for the future. Please no!
We need the signings to come in and push for a start or take the place of some of our starting eleven right now.
One thing in my opinion is that we cant afford to get these signings wrong, if we are claiming that we have money to burn.
Lets face it, Lennon has managed to get one striker (Hooper) out of around a dozen.
Heres hoping he gets in a gem.

I would ignore any talk of signing EPL players, in fact that’s the last place we should be looking…apart from the top 6 mostly run of the mill & vastly overpaid – NO value for money.
There are markets where we could get a much better player for much less money but then we need someone who knows how to deploy the players to best effect. Lennon was a defensive player, has shown next to no signs of any creative / attacking ideas, even less so when we meet a semi-decent Euro side.

I’d be asking such as Dr Jo or Lubo to recommend some promising talent, maybe some Italians with no reserve football we could put them in the shop window. Whoever we sign will be 2-3 years tops. But until we sort out the midfield it won’t matter who is up front – not like we are raining shots at goal, creating countless chances just now. Will Lennon opt for a flair player in midfield instead of his workhorses – can’t see it. Too busy trying to stay unbeaten to outdo Sevco’s pathetic run.

Plenty of newspaper crap, but hopefully we will continue to do our real work away from the chip wrappers.

  • Dombhoy67 says:

Any team celtic try and sign a striker from will bump up the price now it’s out we can afford 6 mill on one signing

  • northarmaghbhoy says:

I stil think/hope we get finnbogasson,I think it’s mind games at the minute wi his agent coming out and saying 8m and there is other clubs looking him etc etc (usual agent talk) thn Lennon coming out 2day and saying we can spend 6m on 1 player sorta gives me an idea tht it will happen,it’s just both party’s trying to get the best deal for thm selves. He was the 1 who came out and said he supported celtic when he lived in Scotland and his hero was henrik when he was younger and wanted the move to celtic in the summer, according to his twitter account.

    • Albhoy82 says:

I thought he was a hibs fan!! And the celtic link was him saying it was the only scottish team he would play for, and that stands to reason unless you’re happy playing against part timers in a part time league ????????

  • drawkcab says:

    Fletch lives

    Haw haw haw

  • Albhoy82 says:

I’d rather try and get Jordan Rhodes if that kind of money was available!! But like above, I’ll be very surprised if celtic even spend 6m in total let alone on one player!!!

    • Monti says:

      Good shout!

    • PJarvis says:

Rhodes is another like Fletcher and Finnbogason where we missed our chance.

As soon as they move for more than £5m that’s us bombed right out unless they have a mare and we can get them cheaper.

If we can afford a £6m player then I’d go get Finnbogason.

      which totally contradict’s my point…….

  • thomas Haverstock says:

This player from Sunderland is he any good How many goals has he scored for them this season Is he a C L player or what liveing in Canada did not hear much about him Hail Hail

    • Monti says:

      Thomas,
Fletcher is no Wayne Biggins, but if your asking me would we like Fletcher at Celtic?
      My answer would be yes!

Would like to see Fletcher & Rhodes as a partnership at Celtic!

      • peter says:

        Monti,

Lawwell has just fainted at the thought
of forking out for BOTH fletcher and
        rhodes !!!

For me,Rhodes is the far superior player.
His goals record speaks for itself.
Blackburn paid over the odds @ 8M.

        They might accept 6M,at a push, + a
        player.
He would be a revelation in a Cetic jersey.
        Furthermore,while growing up in
Scotland he was a Celtic fan.The idea of
        pulling on the Hoops,would attract
        Jordan Rhodes to us.

  • peter says:

Does Lawwell know what Lenny said ?
Or is Lenny being bullish, and trying to
    force the boards hand.
Very intriguing, to say the least.

Fletcher is 5 years too late.
And the 6M dollar man is 6 months too
late,we needed this Roy of the Rovers for
    the CL group stage.

For what it’s worth,I’ll put forward 2 names. As I feel we need 2 strikers to play
    as a partnership.Both are valued at 3M.
Troy Deeney of Watford would be a good
target man.And to play off him,Nahki Wells, of Bradford. He is a poacher with
    great pace.

Lawwell would love this deal,as you get
    2 players for 6M, instead of 1 @ 6M.
