Honest mistake earns Sevco Scottish Cup windfall

John Beaton cheatsCash strapped Sevco were tonight celebrating an unexpected windfall after drawing 1-1 with Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup.

Trailing to an early goal from plumber Ciaran Donnelly it took a late honest mistake from John Beaton to present Bilel Mohsni with an equaliser as the defender knocked goalkeeper Neil Parry and the ball into the net meaning that the two sides will have to play again in a replay at Hamilton’s New Douglas Park.

With Sky Sports likely to show the replay live on television the Ibrox side look like picking up a £100,000 cheque just weeks after gaining an emergency loan to enable them to meet the February payroll.

Discussing the equaliser the £850,000-a-year Ibrox supremo Ally McCoist admitted: “If you look at Mohsni, not having seen it again, he jumps and I don’t think he has any idea where the goalkeeper is and it hits his head and goes in.

“It’s a goal for me. I think the easy decision for the referee was to give a foul but I thought he was very brave in giving the right decision.”

Discussing his side’s thrilling fightback he added: “I am obviously relived that we are still in the cup. For 70-odd minutes we weren’t going to be in the cup but we got the break, got the goal and the main feeling is relief.

“I thought Albion Rovers defended very well but on pressure we certainly deserved to take something out of the game and the draw was what we got.

“I have had a look at the draw but as you saw today, it would be wild of me to have the audacity to look forward to a home tie against Dundee United. I am certainly not going to do that. I think we at least deserve another crack at Albion Rovers.”

Beaton, another of Hugh Dallas’ recruits from the Lanarkshire Referee Association, will be in charge of the replay with the winner playing Dundee United in the semi-final.

That’s the kind of decisions that will see Sevco (should they still exist) through the 2nd division next season, and into the SPFL the year after god help us.

Yet another brer in for a long night with Billy the goat doon the ludge the night.

the rule book says ,if you make contact with the keeper when his feet are of the ground its a foul .please advise as to when this law was modified.

    ANOTHER HONEST MISTAKE !
I remember Dundee Utd manager Ivan Golac talking after a game, at Ibrokes . One of his players got halved in two in the box and no award was given.
THAT WAS A PENALTY ANY WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD APART FROM IBROKES.
We all know the honest mistakes we don’t get there, but how true was his statement
    VERY !

  • jaztecc says:

just read what fatboy said after the game, he told his players to move into difficult areas so they could win fouls/freekicks, WHAT!!!!!!! what happened to keeping the ball and spraying it about and creating openings obviously not the rangers way….. my thoughts were a wee bit match fixing

  • buffythecat says:

Rangers were playing at their correct level today. Imagine if they were playing with players they had not spent vast fortunes on. I

Rangers were playing at about their correct level today but imagine if they were playing with players they had not spent vast fortunes on with money they don’t have!
Imagine if the Scottish referees were objective! and
Imagine if cheating was a crime! WOW!
What a footballing game we would have eh!

Tenner on Albion to win the replay!

    Went to script….end of.

  • johng says:

Fortune at Paradise a few years ago no goal, did not even knock the keeper off his feet. Today Sevco desperate for an equaliser goal keeper wiped out. Say no more.

    • Funkyy says:

      @johng,
That was the first thing that flashed through my mind…I remember it clearly, Fortune’s jump was vertical and clean header….but disallowed by the mason. Today’s was a jump INTO the goalkeeper and with the player’s hands up blocking the goalkeeper’s attempt to get it. A stonewall foul according to the rules…but then when did the old club or it’s bastard chile ever be subject to rules? Hope wee Albion do them in the replay…’cos Dundee Utd definitely will.

  • paul McCann says:

in the interest of fair play ithink that dundee united should be made to play against both teams and the match officials as well

  • Martybhoy says:

The knuckle draggers given a hand by the “impartial” ref. The only surprise was that it did not come via a penalty kick.

  • scoobles says:

There will be no cash windfall as the 18th is champs league night and there are no tv broadcasts of live games allowed unless they kick off at 5.30.
5.30 would be before half of the rovers finish work for the day so that would suit sally

  • larsson7 says:

    rangers,sevco.or tesco,whatever they are,will get football stopped,after what I saw today
Regarding their goal,Richard Gough saying 9 out of 10 referees
would have disallowed it,says it for me,honesty it will not catch on.

  • Monti says:

Dundee its will stroll it against Albion Rovers!

    Would anyone like a bowl?
    🙂

  • tague Boheme says:

There is now a possibility of a rangers v St. Johnstone final, which would be too close to call.

    • jaztecc says:

tague with the referee’s decisions that would be a good call all corrupt funny handshakers but at least there’s a greggs in Hamilton mind you there is a lightbody factory on bothwell road so there will be no doubt a delay to kick off

  • Andy says:

Shocker of a decision, it would appear this new club are benefiting like the previous occupants of Ibrox from honest mistakes.
If it was my club I’d be embarrassed but this newco will take anything, they have no shame.

Mc Coists just a blabbering clown! according to him ‘the ref was brave in giving a goal’ I would think he would need to have been a lot BRAVER to have disallowed it! but as he was neither brave nor correct,to me,that makes him scared a coward! and Wrong! and well taught!
