Champions LeagueFive days before facing Celtic Stjarnan lost 2-1 at home to Valur.

Last night’s defeat was the third successive home reverse for Runar Pall Sigmundsson’s side as they struggle to deal with the tag of being champions.

Midfielder Halldor Bjornsson gave Stjarnan the lead in the 21st minute but Valur equalised six minutes later through Hordur Arnason before Kristinn Sigurdsson scored the winner with 13 minutes left to play.

The win lifts Valur into second place behind leaders FH with Stjarnan in 6th place in the 12 team league with 15 points from 11 matches.

While Stjarnan were toiling Celtic looked impressive in their 1-0 win over Real Sociedad thanks to a second half goal from Gary Mackay-Steven.

New signing Nadir Ciftci was involved in the goal with Ronny Deila pleased with the way his squad is shaping up for the crucial Champions League qualifiers.

After the match the Celtic boss said: “I’m very happy to get Ciftci in. He showed today what he can add to the team. He’s a good football player and he’s going to be an important player for us.

We’re working on the same things all the time and we just need to do it quicker. That is why it’s good to meet a good team and we get a good tempo. We had to defend as well as we did last season and it was much more controlled.

It was Nir Bitton’s first game as well and Mikael Lustig hadn’t played for five months and now he’s played three games in a row, so he needs time to get to his top level.

It’s going to make us even stronger. We have things we can do from the bench and we have a strong squad and everyone is looking forward to the games.”
