Deila hits out at lazy defending

DeilaRonny Deila has claimed that lazy defending is costing his side goals and points.

An 85th minute goal from Paul Quinn handed Celtic their first domestic defeat of the season following a pattern of losing late goals and from set pieces.

Kilmarnock and Inverness Caley Thistle scored late goals against Celtic while Jo Inge Berget’s stoppage time goal for Malmo turned the tie around as the Swede’s ko’d Celtic from the Champions League.

In Sweden Celtic lost two goals from corner kicks with Quinn’s goal today coming from a free kick with little sign of a challenge from the Celtic defenders.

In other games we have been leading and then got a bit lazy,” Deila claimed. “People have been coming over us, again it’s very disappointing to lose goals that way.

I think that we have conceded a lot of goals from set pieces, that’s something that we’ve been working on but we have to work more to stop conceding goals that way.

I’m very disappointed with the result, the first half was good, we controlled it and created chances, we were 1-0 up at the break and quite happy with that

In the second half I think that we had control of the game until the penalty, I have to say it was a very very cheap one, it was a very easy penalty.

After their red card I was very disappointed by what happened, A set piece is something that we should clear easily, we created more chances in the final minutes.

When you see it he is straight onto goal and he is pulled, they got a man sent off we had the chance to win the game or at least get a point, then we gave away that point and its very disappointing.”

Referee Craig Thomson decided to yellow card Andrew Considine for dragging Leigh Griffiths down six yards from goal and decided that a free kick was sufficient after Kenny McLean kicked Mikael Lustig in the head in front of the Aberdeen dug out.

Blaming the ref. is a cop out.
    Was he crap…?…Yep.
Is he always crap…? Yep…so let’s move on.
And blaming “lazy defending” for the defeat..is also a cop out.
A lightweight mid-field..and a severe drought when it comes to creating good chances..doesn’t exactly help
Anybody who is happy with the we play…is in for some bad times ahead.
We are going backwards at a hell of a rate of knots…

    • Swiss says:

Totally agree Mike………..a cop out it is AND we most definitely are going backwards.

Ronny “thinks” we have lost a lot of goal from set pieces!…help ma boab

      Far too lightweight Celtic team!

  • Lochee Celtic says:

    Keep playing Ambrose,will cost manager his job,Rogic slow G M S also poor .

  • Swiss says:

Ronny……lazy defending yes BUT this should have been sorted 4 games ago.
Where is plan B?…….Celtic as a team look lightweight and when will you ever learn about Ambrose? A disaster again and again with a stupid foul at the end of the match, Boyata not impressed with him either and not the answer in defence. A hard season ahead on this showing Celtic…….a lone striker in Lee is not enough against those big lads.

  • Tonybhoy says:

    Totally agree Mike…
Blame defending, blame the penalty…the blame is we were rotten. To say we controlled the game in the first half was nonsense. What game was Delia watching?
Aberdeen had the better efforts throughout the game. We played the same way last season up at Pittodrie, hitting on the break.
I will offend a few hoops fans by saying this but we ain’t making progress. How the hell is Mackay Steven doing to get a game? Mulgrew is finished for me. Stefan Zidane johanson believes his own hype. There is way too much dross in there…
No progress Ronnie…we are going backwards…trust me

    • degsy says:

100% accurate tonybhoy. we are going backwards under wrongy deila. his signings have been atrocious. his refusal to play with two strikers is costing us goals, and his defensive tactics are naive. i am genuinely concerned that we wont win the league this year. id go as far as to say top six is looking cagey!!!!
we need a change in management urgently and we need a change in the board room. how the hell did we lose £3.6m when we wont spend anything. seems to be some ra***rs style financial ongoings behind the scenes.
we need changes on the pitch just as urgently. no idea how good/bad simunovic will be, but we need a partner for him desperately. boyata is terrible. one of the worst ive seen. we all know how bad efe is. mulgrew isnt the player he was under lenny. blackett looks terrible. we need to score three every week to win, but they have no creativity and griffiths looks like the only one capable of scoring. ciftci certinly looks liek another waste of money.

  • degsy says:

lazy defending? i blame lazy coaching. deila is clueless. he is tactically inept. his teams cant defend and they dont score enough goals. its time for a change before its too late.
its just gung ho, everyone bomb forward and leave no one back. thats how we got caught in warsaw last year and he hasnt learned.
out of the champions league three times in a year is bad enough, but by tuesday night we will be five points behind aberdeen in september. they will have 7 wins from 7 league games whilst we’ve conceded 13 goals in our last 7 games.
boyata is worse than ambrose. id take tebilly back ahead of him. blackett looked hopeless defensively as well. rogic was yards off the pace and gms didnt do much. johansen just wanted to kick people. how commons cant get in this side says it all about wrongy deilas mentality.
i think were in for a very tough season if there arent changes urgently.

  • Mark says:

Totally agree with everything people are saying on here, the team where shocking, no plan A never mind plan B, johansen is shoehorned into the team even if it means out of position he’s not kicked a ball all season, boyata is a dud who couldn’t find a Celtic player in the huddle, GMS is a Dundee Utd player never good enough to make the step up, Ronny has to start showing a bit more or it’ll be over very quickly for him the support today made there feelings clear at FT.
Only one player came over at the end to applaud the support Leigh Griffiths, the rest including the management team just walked away, total disgrace

  • John says:

Celtic were shocking today, no doubt. However, Celtic will win the league by at least 10 points. Why do Celtic supporters feel it is a disgrace worthy of sacking the manager every time we drop points. Is this a legacy of the O’Neill years when an extra 30,000 started to show up at Celtic Park because we won every week? Those days are gone. Aberdeen have hardly conceded a goal since the beginning of the season, they are in the form of their lives, and were at home! It will not last. But let’s panic, sack Deila and appoint a real Celtic man! There are so many talented managers to choose from, why not Owen Coyle? Perspective please, it is September 12th.

    • swiss says:

John…..yes the O’Neil days are well gone but it wasn’t just a case of dropped points today,
it was the manner in the way the points were lost, again the other team wanted it more and
Celtic were lacking all over the park with exception of Griffiths.
Owen Coyle?…….why not, he would get rid of some of our defenders who should never be wearing a Celtic jersey……Ambrose and Boyata come to mind

    • Tonybhoy says:

John….I have no doubt that we will win the league but it was the manner of defeat. It was also another big game loss for the team. Knocked out of the Champions league 3 times…Semi Final against Inverness and now against an average Aberdeen side. So the question I ask you John, what progress? Celtic given their resources should win sorry expect to win the league every year right now, but this team is going backwards. I could go right through the side just now and ask……Does Mackay Steven deserve a game in front of Stokes…Does Johanson deserve a game in front of Commons….for feck sake does Mulgrew deserve a game in front of Izzy.
Seems to me we are playing way too many players out of form.

Also to read on here tonight that only Leigh Griffiths went over to fans after the game sums this squad up gutless..

      No progress

  • williebhoy says:

Always going to be a tough game today, our players were all over the world playing in midweek so no time to prepare properly. However poor decision making, team selection and indeed use of substitutes all contributed heavily. Unlucky in hitting the bar, or getting one cleared off the line.
Some players getting the nod while well short in fitness others in confidence.

Back to basics, a really tough game in Amsterdam ahead and we need to come out fighting

  • Monti says:

Had enough of Ronny Deila, I’m very disappointed to have to say that but it’s how it is…
    Goodbye Ronny!

    Celtic are losing big games….regularly!

  • Michaell says:

This is as bad a Celtic team performance I can remember, and it’s all due to the inability of our Manager, I’m sure the inability to find a team mate with a pass is really quite alarming week in week out, what do they do at training? How Rogic gets a start before Commons is staggering and just as Aberdeen are reduced to 10 men and Delia has an opportunity to change the game he stays with Ambrose & Forrest who he had planned to bring on anyway, what was he thinking, should have brought on Commons & Ciftci and may have got something out of the game. I believe this along with many other decisions that Delia makes marks him out as a Manager out of his depth and Celtic fans especially everywhere deserve better. Big games and we don’t turn up.

  • Barry says:

he keeps making excuses, lazy defending ‘switching off,
He picks the same players, who make the same mistakes game in and out.
Midfield has been lack lustre ,no fight,no flair ,
Ronnie needs to get the finger out as its been really poor of late I agree we have been going backwards ,why play 1 up front all the time ???
Fans are going to get really fed up especially if we get humped on Thursday

  • Colin53 says:

I have been saying this for ages now. We need experienced players in each vital position, forward, midfield and of course defence. These kind of players don’t cost a fortune but are priceless for the development of the younger and inexperienced players. Because I feel players like Mulgrew etc. are just past it now

  • James says:

Ronnie used to talk a good game and got the benefit of the doubt from the majority of Celtic fans.
Time for talk is well and truly over.

A Celtic team playing one up front is costing us games and points Kilmarnock, Malmo and Aberdeen. We don’t have the personnel to play one up front, we need two strikers, the best form of attack is to score goals and have a solid defence.

We have a chance with Leigh up front he tries his heart out. Defence is a shambles, Boyata and Blackell look out their depth. Ambrose must be the worst defender I have fever seen in a Celtic Jersey. He is a total liability. As soon as I seen him coming on I knew he would cause us problems, he gave away the free kick for the 2nd goal. Ok the defence were crap also but Ambrose always does it, what does Ddelia see in this guy ?

I can’t believe we didn’t accept £3m for him last January and 1and a half million for him in the recent transfer window, Bitton is unbelievably slow and Johanssen believes all the hype that he is brilliant. Oh dear. We have a better player than both these guys who is playing at Hibs on loan. Young Liam Henderson- never let us down but Delia ignored this.

You better buck up your ideas very quickly Ronny .You are beginning to look out of your depth.

    Hail Hail

    • swiss says:

Spot on James with all your comments………especially about Ambrose! Turning down 3 million was criminal…….he even makes a certain Brazilian(Rafael) we used to have look like Beckanbaur . I just don’t know what our so called management team see in him OR Boyata for that matter.
Ronny is most definitely on a “shoogly peg” especially with the fans …out of his depth indeed,
It was said after the Malmo game that Celtic were a CL club but a Europa team, after that display yesterday we now are a Europa club but an SPFL team……at best.
