Celtic v UMF Stjarnan - UEFA Champions League Second Qualifying Round First LegCeltic fans turned twitter into a sea of dismay and anger as they watched their side lost 3-1 to Molde in the Europa League.

It was a familiar pattern of despair as the hoops found themselves two goals down within 20 minutes despite having at least 70% of possession.

Celtic created a decent opening in the third minute when Stuart Armstrong put a ball across goal but Leigh Griffiths took a heavy touch on the sodden artificial surface.

Molde happily conceded possession in a 4-5-1 formation knowing that every counter attack carried the real threat of a goal after Ola Kamara raced in on the left side of the Celtic defence to shoot past Craig Gordon at his near post.

The second goal came from a corner on the left with Veggard Forren smashing his shot into the surface and beyond Gordon.

Under Ronny Deila Celtic have won just twice- both in Iceland- in 12 European away ties with the defence looking as vulnerable as they did going down 4-1 to Legia Warsaw in a match where the Poles missed two penalties.

Through Salzburg and Zagreb through to Malmo and Amsterdam the vulnerability of the Celtic defence has been obvious with little improvement apparent.

On radio and television former Celts Chris Sutton, Pat Bonner, Stan Petrov, Gordon Strachan and Scott McDonald were unable to offer any crumbs of comfort as they shared their dismay over the airwaves.

The 700 travelling fans tried their best to lift the players but as the wind and rain battered down there was nothing on the pitch to raise their spirits as their side crashed to another European defeat.

Kris Commons gave Celtic the briefest of hope when he scored in the 54th minute but within 60 seconds Molde had restored their two goal advantage when Mohammed Elyounoussi shot home after escaping Mikael Lustig to shoot past Gordon from a tight angle.

Commons was replaced by Nadir Ciftci with 12 minutes left to play with the Celtic support showing the first signs of dissent against Deila. As he went into the dug out Commons was clearly seen shouting in the direction of John Collins as the fall out begins from another numbing European defeat.

“Molde happily conceded possession in a 4-5-1 formation” whilst Celtic offered nothing with a 4-5-1 formation!

The level of opponent we are unable to defeat now is the most worrying. I’m sorry but enough is enough. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last season but he has weakened us and is totally out of his depth in a club that is too big for him.
Results are a disgrace and only by other teams beating one another is the only reason he is a winning manager in Scotland.

Time up Ronny. I am now approaching games with a sense of despair.
Your decision making is becoming alarming.
Kris Commons has always been a model of good behaviour and now is frustrated just like the fans.

Honestly, after the first two goals I thought we were facing a Barcelona-like 6-1 pasting …

The sad thing is I wasn’t really surprised we blew it again! You almost expect us to lose even against the most average of teams. I have followed Celtic for decades, travelled all over Europe to see them in the eighties and onwards but I gave up my season ticket 5 years ago because of the poor quality being served up then, and since then things have got even worse. I am embarrassed at our performances in Europe over recent seasons and I am sad that I have never been back to Celtic Park and unless there are big changes I never will be back. I suspect there are many people in a similar position

Our opponents play a 4-5-1 and we don’t know or can’t break them down. We play a 4-5-1 and our opponents look like scoring in almost every attack!

  • Rab says:

Total shocking now he has them playing like school boys and collins should know better what celtic do best and how they play get rid of the lot of them its a joke even players dont like the way he wants them to play so they have just gave up
