Chris Sutton believes that Efe Ambrose’s best position is sitting in the stand!

And for good measure the former Celtic favourite believes that he is a better defender than the Nigerian internationalist.

Ambrose has been the target for most criticism following Celtic’s 1-0 defeat against Lincoln Red Imps in the Champions League second round qualifier.

Sutton expects his old side to rescue the tie next Wednesday but wasn’t slow to put the boot into Ambrose after another big match disaster.

How many times are we going to have to talk about Efe Ambrose?” he asked in his Daily Record column. “I’ve got nothing against the guy but he should be nowhere near the side.

This question about is he better at right back or centre half? Efe’s best position is in the stand.

Brendan must have spoken to people at the club and known how much damage he can do. A couple of half decent friendlies just lulls people in to a false sense of security because there’s always a disaster lurking with Ambrose.

Honestly, there must be a better centre back option out there. In fact, I’m a better option than Efe right now.”

As well as the selection of Ambrose hoops fans were left puzzled by the role handed to Leigh Griffiths.

Rather than being paired with Moussa Dembele through the middle last season’s top scorer was switched to a role wide on the right.

Despite that Griffiths struck the woodwork twice with Sutton convinced that Rodgers has a top class strike partnership to work with.

He added: “In Moussa Dembele they have a beast of a guy up front and a lethal striker in Leigh Griffiths alongside him.

We could all see from the start Lincoln were going to make space tight and pack the defence. There’s nothing wrong with using the diagonal ball. It should have made sense to get players out wide and get crosses in to the box.

When they did those things late on the chances started to come. I’m not convinced about Griffiths out right. He’s a poacher and his best work is in between the posts.

I can’t understand what is so wrong about playing an old-fashioned 4-4-2 with wide men and a front partnership. Dembele and Griffiths could really complement each other.”
