Hapoel Beer Sheva warmed up for their Champions League play off against Celtic with a 4-2 win last night over Maccabi Haifa.

While coach Bachar Barak will be pleased with the win following a 1-0 home defeat to Ashdod on Tuesday the Israeli champions have lost five goals in three domestic games since being drawn to face Celtic.

Hapoel kept two clean sheets to beat Olympiakos 1-0 on aggregate to bely their co-efficient to ensure that they will be playing in European football until the turn of the year.

Elyaniv Barda was missing from last night’s match with the Hapoel skipper expected to miss both legs against Celtic through injury.

Meanwhile Wednesday’s match will be the first time that Hawk Eye goal-line technology will be used in Scottish football.

Hawk Eye is standard practise in cricket and tennis but after three years use in the English Premier League UEFA have decided to role it out in their top tournament.

UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina said: “Goal-line technology and additional assistant referees complement each other perfectly.

“The main task of the AARs is not to control the goal-line and decide whether a ball has crossed it.

Rather they are responsible for monitoring everything that is happening in the penalty area overall, aiding the main referee in making important decisions in the box.

“Now, with goal-line technology focused on the goal-line, the additional assistants can focus exclusively on the control of other incidents in the penalty area, the most crucial area of the pitch.”
