John Beaton will take charge of Celtic’s Premiership opener away to Hearts on Sunday.

The Lanarkshire referee was part of the Scottish consignment at Euro 2016 but returned after the group phase when Willie Collum was ditched.

Beaton was in charge for Celtic’s 2-1 League Cup win at Tynecastle last season where he dished out seven yellow cards with Leigh Griffiths, Stefan Johansen and Nir Bitton booked.

In his last Celtic appointment Beaton took charge of the forgetful 0-0 home draw with Dundee at the start of March.

Beaton first came to prominence in March 2014 when he allowed Bilel Mohsni to manhandle Albion Rovers keeper Neil Parry to push the ball into the net to give Sevco a Scottish Cup replay.

Despite his appearance at Euro 2016 Collum isn’t on duty this weekend with Don Robertson getting the season underway when he takes charge of the Sevco v Hamilton match at Ibrox on Saturday lunchtime.

Andrew Dallas, son of former SFA supervisor Hugh, will be in charge of the Sevco v Peterhead Betfred Cup tie on Tuesday with Kevin Clancy refereeing Celtic v Motherwell the following night.

Tomorrow’s Champions League qualifier against Astana will be refereed by Istvan Kovacs

The 31-year-old Romanian whistler has never taken charge of a Champions League match but has extensive experience of underage European matches at club and international level.

Last season Kovacs took charge of three Europa League qualifying matches plus one low key group match between Qabala and Kuban Krasnador. In season 14/15 he was also in charge of Kuban Krasnador’s Europa League group match against Everton at Goodison Park.
