Ian Durrant has claimed that Sevco were never going to take the SPFL title from Celtic!

A dozen games into the new season it seems that #goingfor55 has been replaced by the white flag of surrender as far as stopping Celtic goes.

Following last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final win on penalties over Celtic the message from Ibrox couldn’t have been more concise.

Back where they ‘belong’ the entitled people were about to take the title from Celtic after the hoops had won five titles ‘tainted’ by the ‘financial breakdown’ of the company that ran their rivals.

The signings of Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and half a dozen freebies from England underlined the seriousness of the crusade with thousands of supporters buying up season tickets on the back of the #goingfor55 slogan.

Durrant was sacked by Mark Warburton during the summer but is now wheeled out to promote various events and present the message of the day from within Ibrox.

Everybody knows that it was just about consolidating Rangers this year and getting them challenging,” he claimed yesterday at an event to promote North Lanarkshire’s Sporting Hall of Fame. “Hopefully with a couple of new additions they can go and push on.

There’s a lot of good stuff being played, but they just don’t seem to be able to finish teams off at the moment. Then they’ll lost a goal and they’re left chasing their tails a bit but they will be there or thereabouts, they will be strong enough to be up there and be putting a challenge in.”

Of course, there has to be some realism from the Rangers support. It’s the first year back from where they were to where they want to be.”

Following the 1-1 home draw with St Johnstone Mark Warburton claimed that he had the backing of 95% of the support and wasn’t interested in the other 5%.

After the 1-1 draw with Ross County a look at social media would suggest that the former city trader should revise those figures.
