Mark Warburton’s hopes of finishing second in the SPFL suffered a serious set-back when Sevco drew 1-1 at Ross County today.

Last week’s 3-0 win over Kilmarnock, coupled with dropped points by Hearts, St Johnstone and Aberdeen, triggered a wave of euphoria from Ibrox that seemed completely inappropriate in a week in which they had been outplayed Celtic in the Betfred Cup and drew at home with St Johnstone.

Sevco got off to a dream start when 38-year-old Clint Hill opened the scoring with an 8th minute header but Andrew Davies equalised in the 26th minute for County who remain at the bottom of the league.

Despite some questionable decisions from Andrew Dallas County pushed for a winner until the final whistle with Sevco happy to take a point down the road.

That point lifts the tribute act above St Johnstone and Hearts but leaves them trailing Aberdeen in second place and 11 points behind Celtic who have a game in hand #goingfor55.

Speaking last week ahead of the visit from Kilmarnock Warbo, who used to work as a city trader, said: “There have been some rogue comments in papers, or radio phone-ins, whatever it may be – but if the board come and speak to me that is a different proposition.

Right now, we are right in the mix, if we win our next two games and are second going into the international break, is that bad for a team which has just come up?

“Is it bad if we are sitting second after a ‘shocking’ start. I am not so sure.”

The point lifts County to within a point of second bottom Dundee with just three points separating the bottom seven sides. Sevco are closer to the bottom of the table than the top.
