SFA president Alan McRae has praised Stewart Regan for ‘working his socks off for the association’.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun McRae launched a vigorous defence of Gordon Strachan despite Scotland’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

After six years in control of the SFA it’s difficult to see what Regan has achieved with the international teams at almost every level failing to make any impact.

Commercially the SFA lag further than ever behind other comparable nations not helped by Regan’s claim of social unrest as Rangers entered liquidation.

Sizzling away in the background is the chronic governance failure over the Rangers licence in 2011 with two very different versions of events emerging between what the SFA told Celtic and their correspondence with UEFA.

Despite that catalgue of failure McRae chose to go down the abuse line as he defended his own record and the that of the chief executive.

He told The Sun: “I’ve had personal abuse and stick from people. If they want to conduct themselves like that, well that’s up to them but I feel I can keep my head up.

Stewart Regan’s suffered some terrible stuff and it’s right out of order. He’s worked his socks off for the association.”
